Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 19/01/2026hey yeah im still alive but the months since my last post have been awful and fairly catastrophic for my mental health, im only just now trying to get back into dev stuff but unsure if ill want to share progress or not, hopefully ill have something to show off sometime 3160

Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 01/07/2025hey friendly advice if youre ever thinking to yourself "oh ill just quickly look at that new factory game update that just came out" the only thing you should actually be doing quickly is going outside before the next 14 days of your life suddenly disappear before your eyes 190
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 15/06/2025i had no idea i uploaded this with sound lmao 010
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 15/06/2025Managed to convert the pet controller to a rigidbody system, so now they can be picked up and carried and flung around Also squeezed in a genetics/reproduction system before getting super sick and being knocked out for the rest of the week Stress testing is fun though #godot #indiedev #gamedev 1304
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 09/06/2025It's less about making everything balanced/scalable and more about making most systems ignorable without them impacting your preferred playstyle if you refuse to engage with them. Like with Minecraft how you can just build random stuff and never engage with the Nether/End if you don't want to. 000
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 08/06/2025One of the things I want to enable is to allow the player to choose if they just want to look after a single creature or have an entire collection/community of them, I want to enable multiple different styles of play 100
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 08/06/2025They all have their own genetic profile as breeding/trait chasing is something I'm wanting to implement, same with decorations and clothes/accessories 010
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 08/06/2025Pretty much everything you see here is made entirely with raw control nodes and very few imported textures. It's just lots of panels, margin containers and subviewport containers, so the scene tree gets a bit cramped but if everything is anchored correctly it always scales perfectly 220

Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 08/06/2025They have goal oriented action planning agents up and running currently, I just need to add more behaviours and activities, but right now they can gather wood stone and gold on their own terms and get to keep a small portion for themselves to buy their own items if they want something 010

Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 05/06/2025I added an option to disable the background transparency and now it looks like one of those fake operating systems you see in random TV shows #godot #gamedev #indiedev 0204
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 01/06/2025Added a goal oriented AI system to the pets so they can think for themselves now, and to keep an eye on their new behaviors I added a button that seamlessly transitions from the desktop to a fullscreen 1st-person mode so you can chat with them and explore their world #godot #indiedev #gamedev 1154
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 25/05/2025Wanted to get some UI programming practice in so I spent the last week putting together a rough prototype for a game about looking after little creatures that live in a crystal ball on your desktop with a sort of TCG-esque menu aesthetic and now I'm kinda obsessed with it #godot #gamedev #indiedev 511821

Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 03/05/2025man i though refactoring stuff was dull but writing a save system is a fucking draaaaaaaaaaaaaaag 281
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 14/04/2025im a few minor features away from connecting all the main systems and finally closing up the main gameplay loop in my current project, but these minor features are causing me more grief than the big things, not from a technical perspective but cause i cant make up my mind on how i want them to work 060
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 10/04/2025just wrapped what an absolutely exquisite game 10/10 130
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 25/03/2025man when people said game development was hard i thought they meant like 'creating enough content is hard' or 'making the game fun is hard' but its actually 'i cant believe im refactoring this system for the 5th time' hard 1110
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 14/03/2025The biggest one is external dependency issues, but also overuse of inheritance and improper use of autoloads 000
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 14/03/2025recently each little change to a system i make has been feeling like a mountain of work did some reading and turns out its just a result of my dogshit architecture which i couldnt recognise cause know nothing about good code architecture practices the joys of self-teaching yourself any skill lmao 190
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 10/03/2025had a dream about a game that was like a combination of yume niki, basilisk 2000 and babbdi and I can't stop thinking about it 030
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 03/03/2025so turns out im actually the crackpot dev because my initial solution worked but other junk in my code has been ruining the output for the last 4 hours and i didnt notice lmao classic for prosperity: 030
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 03/03/2025this is a shot in the dark but do any crackpot game developers/audio engineers know how you could completely isolate the left or right audio channel from a signed floating-point PCM stereo audio buffer at runtime? (related to Godot's AudioEffectCapture buffer) #godot #indiedev #gamedev 1113
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 20/02/2025i think the easiest way to tell if you're taking a project seriously is checking whether you've made a debug menu or not 030
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 14/02/2025I know I haven't been sharing much lately but a small update: today I achieved a major technical/proof-of-concept milestone for my current project after about a month of design and programming. Now I have clear path to get it to a state where I start showing it, so hopefully I can share more soon™ 1101
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 27/01/2025just droppin in to let yall know i havent given up or died or anything, december and january have just been a bit of a disaster irl and havent really had time to get much done, im still experimenting on ideas here and there so hopefully as things settle down i might have something to show off again 050
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 11/12/2024How do game devs manage to actually stick with an idea for long enough to see it through to the end without jumping ship? Is it sheer will power? Is it an intense emotional connection to your idea? Is it sheer terror in the face of failure? How do you do it? (yes this is a cry for help) 131
Alabaster Garden @alabastergarden.bsky.social · 06/12/2024I've fallen behind on my challenge as I'm really struggling to find motivation to do art, and recognising that is triggering a sort of crisis-of-faith. I'll see if can force myself to do something small to post soon. 030
