p.s. when you develop enough of a critical eye to find the flaws in the things that you used to think were untouchably, impossibly perfect, you realize that it is okay to make imperfect things. the next step from there is "it's ok for ME to make imperfect things"

Perhaps it's less a case of real vs stylized textures, and more about whether they have a clear visual hierarchy and appropriate material properties, I dunno

On the flipside, SF6 leans further away from realism, but I find it more of a mixed bag. Marisa's hair looks great in concept art for example, but feels off to me somehow in game. Meanwhile Yasmine, though her proportions became less exaggerated, feels like she translated phenomenally

Tekken 8 goes more extreme with the stylization - the men in particular having really intense, angular faces, and over the top, highly detailed muscles - but again it combines it with realistic textures and lighting, and still manages to feel cohesive to me

FF7R is mostly realistic, but you can still see aspects of Nomura's stylizations, even down to the characters' eyes, and I think it works really well

My immediate thought was "these designs would be better suited to more painterly textures." - quite liked how this Goron's beard reminded me of the brushwork in the promo art for BotW and TotK for instance - but there are definitely games that have managed stylized proportions AND realistic textures
