if you want to know why I'm the way I am, one factor is that I was a 90s "gifted" kid. That meant I got exiled to a desk in the hall for several entire school years so that my untreated ADHD self would not disrupt class after absorbing all the material and getting bored

one thing the LLM stuff has made clear is that a lot of "engineers" in the space have no notion of the distinction between engineering controls and administrative controls for reducing hazards

there was a pack of coyotes howling near the Stanford cactus garden, and I had a slightly magical moment when I was walking by and heard them

I was dreading it all day, but I'm glad I went! It's also given me some stuff to think about as I continue to navigate my midlife crisis (year 7! is it still a crisis after so long?)

This is definitely a pipe.

it is nice to be in an office where the response to "some idiot thinks it's okay to drop their weights in the gym and shake the whole building" is "we'll tell them to stop" and not "we can't disrupt the cult the CEO's fitness instructor buddy is forming"

NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day site got a facelift from its 2000s design. The URLs changed from deterministic dates to inconsistent slugs. That broke my script for grabbing images to display on idle screens. I fixed it, but I wish every update to software didn't make things flashier but worse.

brain: I appreciate that you have this record of every shitty thing ever done to me and every bad decision I made since the age of 13, and can causally tie them to the current sorry state of my life, but we don't need to go over all of that every single fucking day

Finished re-reading Anathem for the n-th time. It's a very cozy read for me. I think its main flaw is that it explains too much and so undermines itself.

I'm like 40% confident that work is keeping me around as layoff fodder. It's more likely that management just sucks at their job, but also it feels like I don't exist some weeks.

maybe someday science will figure out why I impose arbitrary standards on myself and then feel bad for not meeting them. Nobody cares when I get into work if it's before 11 AM so why did sleeping in for half an hour cause me to be all stressed out this morning?

I would characterize it more as we invented a new way to do imperialism where the US/EU get stuff from the periphery, paid for in vibes. But yeah, that's starting to break down as resources run out, and there's enough productivity outside of the US/EU that we can be cut out.

Book review: if you're a leftist, you should read this. It does a good job of explaining historical attempts to establish socialism, and outlines what any transition is going to have to contend with in the coming years. My takeaway is to root for the end of US/EU imperialism, but there's a lot more

It's been a tough time pulling myself out of the hole I was in three years ago, but I'm so much more functional. Still not doing everything I want to be doing, and still doing some things I don't, but things are moving in the right direction.
