Meet our keynote speaker: Mahesh Sankaran! 🌍🌾 His research explores how climate change shapes tropical ecosystems, especially savannas & grasslands, and how ecological knowledge can support restoration. #NSOGfÖ2026 @nordicoikos.bsky.social

A study using thousands of tree-ring sites around the world suggests that as the climate warms, more trees will experience growth constraints from dryness by 2100, limiting carbon sequestration. In PNAS: ow.ly/oI6k50ZMEbn
Douglas-fir, one of the studied tree species, shows growth suppression at both very high and very low vapor pressure deficits.

In our new preprint we propose a way to measure and partition diversity by working directly on the distributions. If you wanna try this with your own data, we created functions for calculating diversity, partitioning it and visualizing distributions 📈 Check the functions: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Old-growth grasslands are slow to recover once destroyed. Characteristic plants of such grasslands are shorter and have smaller leaves with less nitrogen than plants in secondary grasslands, which are resource-acquisitive and more competitive. In PNAS: ow.ly/zOl950ZFVFu

🌿 New paper! The forest herb layer can account for up to 80% of plant diversity, yet remains understudied. I’m glad to have contributed to this Yale-led collaboration identifying 100 questions to advance forest herb-layer ecology. What did we miss? 🔗 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Tiny fat droplets in cat kidneys—whose function has been mysterious for more than a century—encase chemical calling cards unique to each feline, allowing these messages to remain stable long after the cats themselves have left the vicinity. Learn more: scim.ag/46deS5C

Tropical forests can recover rapidly after disturbance, but certain old-growth specialist trees will be missing. A study in Costa Rica shows that low abundance and low seed production hold back these trees, suggesting targeted plantings could help. In PNAS: ow.ly/Shla50ZtWMN

EXCELLENT: The Netherlands new OA policy seems to be well thought through obc.copim.pub/when-scaling... Policy explicitly recommends redirection & reallocation of funds from existing ‘big deal’ budgets towards community-driven alternatives, incl university-led diamond OA & Netherlands Uni Presses

Our paper on how understorey vegetation responds to enhanced forest structure was just published @jappliedecology.bsky.social! We found an increase in alpha- and gamma-diversity driven by heterogeneity in light conditions at the landscape-scale 🌱🌳🥬 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Enhancing structural heterogeneity in managed forest landscapes promotes gamma but not beta diversity in understorey plant communities
Our findings highlight the benefits of enhancing structural heterogeneity for understorey plant diversity in managed forest landscapes. Specifically, management strategies that create a spatial mosai...
