Happy 50th to Rocket Raccoon. “Just a fictional character,” I know, but there is no hyperbole in saying he has had a tremendous positive impact on my life. 🚀🦝

After multiple playthroughs: it is beautiful. I love it. LOVE IT. Nintendo has finally given Star Fox the full cinematic treatment it always longed for, with quality of gameplay to match. I hope this is a rebirth and a relaunch for the series that leads to even bigger and better in the future.

I downloaded & played the Star Fox demo and there is a tanuki that runs you through the training module and I luff heem. ❤️

Screenshot from the downloadable demo of “Star Fox” on Nintendo Switch 2. The Arwing starfighter is flying over an alien ocean. At the bottom of the screen, an anthro tanuki named “Yaru De Pon” gives you training tips for flying your Arwing.

A closer look at Yaru De Pon, the tanuki training instructor from “Star Fox” on Nintendo Switch 2. He is wearing a green cap like a leaf on his head and he is adorable and I love him and everyone else should love him too.

This is a cat checkpoint; relinquish your most recent cat picture on your phone.

Our cheeky grey tabby, Eliot, has taken over the bed of our 6x larger dog (who will absolutely not challenge the cat’s authority in this matter). The dog’s blanket & squeaky chicken sandwich have also been lost in the hostile takeover.

Of course it’s “just a movie,” “just a character,” “just a game” - but seeing Fox on the movie screen sent me straight back to that rainy day in ‘93, and happy memories from a childhood that didn’t always have them. Haters can hate, but I’ll hear none of it. Thank you, Nintendo & Illumination.

Who knows why & how we connect with what we do as kids, but everyone has core memories that stay with them as they grow. Fox McCloud meant something to me as a kid, and that significance never faded over the years, even as so much else faded and fell away, forgotten.

We also had a Nintendo Power subscription, and concurrent with the game’s release, the magazine ran an 11-part serial Star Fox comic. The comic developed the characters & story far beyond the game, but the two of them together painted a character - Fox McCloud - onto whom I latched like little else.

It was a big deal back in 1993 when my mom came home from work one rainy day and surprised us with a copy of Nintendo’s brand new “Star Fox” SNES game. Single parent home on a school teacher salary - we never went hungry, fortunately, but we almost never got the latest, hottest anything.

Dog selfie. Dogs do not make good photographers. Phodographer.

Blurry and overexposed, there is a vague reminiscence of one dog eye and one dog ear, if you already knew what you were looking at. Perhaps a long dog snoot is reaching out to boop the phone? It is postmodern Impressionism. Or something.

New season of Doctor Who has started. I LOVE Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, and now “Lux” has vaulted to a spot among my most favorite Who episodes. Brilliant writing from Russell T. Davies.

Mr. Ring-a-Ding from the “Lux” episode of Doctor Who. He’s a blue-skinned 1950’s-style cartoon character with an undersized boater hat and noodle arms & legs. He would not be out of place in Cuphead.
