Just saw Star Trek: the Voyage Home on the big screen, and I will be riding this wave of euphoria all week. Gotta love a film that imagines a better future, one in which humans get our act together and take steps to correct past atrocities 🥹

There are absolutely foxglove trees in faerie with enormous silver seedpods and blossoms with a heady scent that overwhelms mortals.

Home and very pleased with the treasures I found.
Three stacks. One stack of hardcover books (mostly Anne McCaffrey), one stack of paperbacks (mostly McCaffrey, Vonda McIntyre, and Star Trek), and one complete set of Star Trek TNG DVDs.Three books selected from the aforementioned stacks:
The Coelura by McCaffrey, an amazing golden age SF cover featuring a woman in an ornate dress.

Crisis on Doona, another golden age SF cover by McCaffrey, featuring a cat person riding a giant snake whole brandishing a long knife near a guy with a spear.

The Book of Merlyn by T.H. White, featuring a simple sketch of an old man (presumably Merlyn).

Is there a better way to spend a summer Sunday afternoon than on a back porch with lemonade and Chekhov?
On a wicker table sits a book open to “Gooseberries” by Chekhov and a glass of lemonade with a whale on it that says “it’s okay.” In the background is greenery from the backyard.

Today Persephone encountered a snake for the first time,* and she was enthralled. No matter how old you are,** you can always encounter new concepts! *She is in a screened-in patio, there is no risk for the cat and the snake to harm one another, she’s just looking. **She turns eleven this summer 😭
The camera is looking over the shoulder of a housecat in a screened-in patio. The cat is looking at a small black snake that one can just make out in the grass if you look closely.A closer picture of the snake (still through the patio screen). I think it’s a North American Racer (but I’m no snake expert).

I underestimated how excited people were about the Target/Pokémon collab and did not foresee the line to get in the store, BUT I still got the Snorlax and Arcanine tumblers that I was there for (and a t-shirt and hoodie).

What poem are you carrying with you today? #pocketpoem
A handwritten copy of Mary Oliver’s “I go down to the shore” next to a latte.

Poem text:
I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour the waves
are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am miserable,
what shall—
what should I do? And the sea says
in its lovely voice:
Excuse me, I have work to do.

I do love the simplicity of the books with only the charter mark, but there is a special place in my heart for the older covers. This is at least partially rooted in nostalgia, but also: they’re so pretty!

The Fayetteville Public Library displayed art by local artist Sarah Spence this year, and I was so glad I got to see it. Her Swan Lane series in particular is stunning.
Photo of a painting hanging on a wall. The painting is of a figure approaching a lake in the middle of a forest. At the center of the lake is a sword, but the sword is being held by a skeleton. Look closer, and the area surrounded the lake is full of bones.A painting. A woman turns into a swan and flies out of the arms of her lover. Around them, a flock of swans flies through the air.
