#books #booksky Re-reading The Hunt for Red October. 1st time was when it debuted forever ago. I'd forgotten just how far into the weeds Clancy got with the mechanical operation of literally everything on a ship, sub, or aircraft. And he didn't serve in the military; he was just a military geek.

Reading After Dark, My Sweet, by Jim Thompson. It's been made into a film, but ignore that. Here's the hypothetical casting I picture as I read: Collins: early '80s Mickey Rourke Stoker: 2026 Josh Brolin Fay: 2016 Jennifer Jason Leigh #books #novels #literature

Struggling to find a book. Nothing appeals. Some of my likes: Murakami (but writers “like Murakami” never are) Sherlock Holmes (read the Conan Doyle canon many times; other authors are just ok) Raymond Chandler (imitators aren't as good) Wm Gibson’s Bigend trilogy (not into real cyberpunk)

Money Heist on Netflix is maddening. Just enough of a heist story to keep me watching but: * overabundance of flashbacks * inept cops * cliche turf squabble by law enforcement * endless personal drama * blunder after blunder by this "highly trained" heist team #netflix #moneyheist

Ludicrous. I'll admit this film is interesting (to a point), original, and suspenseful, but it’s also (unintentionally) comically dumb, straining credibility throughout. Hartnett’s character experienc...

A ★★½ review of Valley of the Dead (2020)
An OK zombie flick, but worthwhile. It has its slow moments and some of the attempts at humor create an unevenness. Two characters look so much alike, it threw me off at times.

A ★★★★½ review of Leave the World Behind (2023)
A trippy and original modern suspense film. Loaded with tension, paranoia, and an overwhelming need to know what in the hell is going on. It just gets wilder and wilder. The kind of film Hitchcock might make if he were around today. Great cast. My favorite of Julia Roberts’ performances.

A ★★★½ review of Glass Onion (2022)
An hour in, I would have said this movie was going to be way too long, at 2 hrs, 21 mins. But, the way the film plays out, it's the right length. A lot happens, and lot has to be unpacked. In that seemingly slow, introductory hour, important things are occurring, of course, even if you don't know it. Great cast, most of whom play the worst people on earth (influencers and disruptors). Maybe the best of the Knives Out films for me.

Twin Peaks: The Return Re-Watch No. 12-ish Part 18 This ep rips by. So much happens. Current theory: Cooper is now awake. He exits the Lodge. Everything previous was a story he conjured while in the Red Room, but the story had repercussions. Laura is alive, somewhere. #twinpeaks #davidlynch

Latest read: The Club Dumas I first read this after the film The Ninth Gate came out. I recalled liking the book, as well, but on this 2nd read, it’s awful. Bogged down repeatedly by long detours into literary history, Dumas’ biography, the minutiae of book binding. The movie is so much better.
