The Role of Angiopoietin-Like Proteins 3 and 4 and Their Target Lipases in CKD: A Drug-Target Mendelian Randomization Study bit.ly/4z0oNb6 (OPEN ACCESS)
Study design and biological mechanisms. ANGPTL3 inhibits lipoprotein lipase and endothelial lipase. ANGPTL4 inhibits lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase. Lipoprotein lipase hydrolyzes TG in lipoproteins. Endothelial lipase and hepatic lipase remodel HDL particles from larger, more buoyant HDL2 particles to smaller, denser HDL3 particles, which results in a decrease in HDL-C. Images are provided by NIAID NIH BIOART Source (bioart.niaid.nih.gov/bioart/171) and Servier Medical Art (https://smart.servier.com/), licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). ANGPTL, angiopoietin-like protein; CKD, chronic kidney disease; eGFRcrea, estimated glomerular filtration rate based on serum creatinine; EL, endothelial lipase; HDL, high-density lipoprotein; HL, hepatic lipase; LDL, low-density lipoprotein; LPL, lipoprotein lipase; TG, triglycerides; VLDL, very low-density lipoprotein.

Normoproteic Plant-Dominant Protein Diets, Uremic Toxins, and Gut Microbiota in Patients With Advanced CKD: A Randomized Controlled Trial bit.ly/4hlfL2s
Results of the co-primary outcomes Changes in serum uremic toxin levels from baseline to Week 4 are shown. Serum TMAO levels were significantly reduced in the 70% plant-protein diet group compared with the control group, whereas no significant differences were observed for indoxyl sulfate or p-cresyl sulfate. FDR-adjusted P-values were calculated based on the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure. Bars indicate 95% confidence intervals. Abbreviations: FDR, false discovery rate; TMAO, trimethylamine N-oxide.

Carbamylation as a Novel Marker of Coronary Artery Calcification in People With CKD: Findings from a Phenome-Wide Association Study in CRIC bit.ly/4xMU6VK
PheWAS results for continuous phenotypes. Each linear regression model uses the log-transformed and standardized carbamylated albumin (C-Alb) as the exposure and a log-transformed phenotype as the outcome, adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, eGFR, and urinary protein. Effect sizes are shown as exponentiated beta coefficients, representing the proportional change (i.e., multiplicative effect or fold change) in the phenotype per 1 standard deviation increase in log-C-Alb. Panel A). Filled circles indicate statistical significance at the Benjamini–Yekutieli-corrected False Discovery Rate (FDR) threshold. Panel B) Displays only the significant continuous phenotypes. Abbreviations: SUN, serum urea nitrogen; LAD, left anterior descending; HDL, high density lipoprotein; MAP, Mean Arterial Pressure; CO2, Carbon dioxide; HA1C, Hemoglobin A1C, PLT, platelets; RBC, red blood cells; WBC, white blood cells; VLDL, very low-density lipoprotein.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Living Donor Kidney Transplantation in California: 2010-2024 bit.ly/3QL7Uk6 (OPEN ACCESS)
Racial/Ethnic Disparities in 2-Year Living Donor Kidney Transplantation among Waitlisted Candidates Preemptively and on Dialysis in California from 2010 to 2024. (A) and (C): California unadjusted 2-Year Probability of LDKT Following Kidney Transplant Waitlisting Preemptively or on Dialysis, respectively. (B) and (D): California Adjusted Subdistribution hazard ratios of 2-Year LDKT Following Kidney Transplant Waitlisting Preemptively or on Dialysis, respectively. An estimated adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio of less than 1 indicates that the racial/ethnic group is less likely to receive living donor kidney transplantation compared to White candidates. Competing risk analyses were performed using the Fine and Gray method.

Complement in Kidney Disease: Core Curriculum 2026 bit.ly/4cTLy85
Overview of complement effects. Complement activation generates multiple effector molecules. C3 fragments (C3b, iC3b, C3d) are covalently bound to target cell membranes. C3b on the surface of target cells can form C3 convertase, leading to further complement activation at that site. Both iC3b and C3d are ligands for 4 complement receptors (CR1-4) expressed by leukocytes and dendritic cells. C3a and C5a are soluble peptides that are released during the cleavage of C3 and C5, respectively. They are ligands for receptors expressed by leukocytes and parenchymal cells. They induce multiple downstream functions, including the chemotaxis and activation of myeloid cells to sites of inflammation. Activation can also generate C5b-9 multimers on cell membranes. C5b-9 forms a pore through the outer membrane. In sublytic quantities this can cause cell activation. If sufficient C5b-9 is formed it can cause osmotic lysis of the cell. Created with BioRender.

Meaningful Engagement of Patients in Research bit.ly/4fcuMl0 (OPEN ACCESS)
Framework for meaningful engagement of patients in research. The framework (adapted from Harrison et al.)15 includes three distinct but inter-related elements of stakeholder engagement in research: research phases, foundational principles, and best practices. The framework elements are inter-related as shown by the arrows surrounding the figure. For example, the foundational engagement principles serve as the foundation for the best practices and are relevant to activities across the research continuum from design to dissemination.

Reproductive Health in CKD and Kidney Failure: Core Curriculum 2026 bit.ly/4gaZj4j (OPEN ACCESS)
A simplified figure of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is shown normally and affected by kidney disease. Blue arrows indicate the normal axis, which involves the pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), resulting in the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) that then stimulates the testes and ovaries. The broken arrows represent the normal negative feedback that occurs. In kidney disease, uremia affects all levels of the axis, inhibiting hormone production. High prolactin primarily acts at the level of the hypothalamus, further augmenting the suppression of the axis.
