Namibia advances repatriation of Robben Island Prisoners’ remains
Staff Reporter THE Namibian delegation that departed for Cape Town last month to engage with its South African counterparts on the exhumation and repatriation of the remains of Namibian ex-political prisoners is making progress. The delegation left on 9 July 2026 to facilitate the mission, which aims to exhume and repatriate the remains of Simon Petrus Niilenge and Festus Nehale, as well as ancestral human remains. The exhumation of Niilenge and Nehale is expected to be completed ahead of their reburial in Namibia on Heroes’ Day, 26 August 2026. “As part of the ongoing mission, the Namibian delegation on 12 August 2026 conducted customary rituals and verification processes at the Iziko Museums in Cape Town. The delegation also conducted customary rituals at Gugulethu Cemetery, where former Robben Island political prisoner, the late Simon Petrus Niilenge, was buried 52 years ago, and at Maitland Cemetery, where the late Festus Nehale was buried 55 years ago,” Matty Kaminzi, Acting Senior Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, said. --- EXHUMATION: The remains of Former Robben Island political prisoners, Simon Petrus Niilenge and Festus Nehale exhumed  in Cape Town on 13 August 2026. Photos: Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. --- She explained that the customary rituals form an important part of the cultural and legal protocols preceding the formal receiving, exhumation and transportation of the remains to Namibia for final reburial. “The processes are being undertaken with the participation of family representatives, traditional leaders, former political prisoners, and relevant technical and government officials. The mission further involves the repatriation of 84 ancestral human remains of Namibians,” Kaminzi said. She added that the mission includes former political prisoners, family members, traditional leaders, government officials, heritage and cultural practitioners, historians, archaeologists and other technical experts. “The Government of Namibia remains committed to ensuring that the repatriation process is conducted with dignity, cultural sensitivity and respect, and that the remains are ultimately returned home for final reburial,” Kaminzi said. Good to see this, and good that Emily is named alongside Rudolf. Colonial memory usually keeps the executed man and loses the woman who lived with the aftermath. A street name is the most durable memorial there is: it puts the history into people's daily addresses.

Glad to see this. Namibia is a hard case for anyone who wants mission Christianity to be only an instrument of control. Under South African rule the churches were among the few bodies that could still assemble and speak, and the 1971 Lutheran open letter came out of exactly that position.

Thank you for posting this. Seybold is right that the responsibility sits with museums. The harder part is that most of the OvaHerero and Nama record survives inside mission and colonial military archives, so an honest exhibition also has to show visitors how the source itself was made.

Beautiful object, Patrick. Worth noting how contested the 'Mother Goddess' label has become: since Ucko's critiques, many prehistorians read these figures as ancestors, protective charms, or even toys. The uncertainty is the honest part of the story.

What a find, Charles. The detail that renunciation stopped at a single slave says so much about where Late Antique society located the line between poverty and degradation. Giving up wealth was piety; giving up mastery was social death.

That phrase, the refusal to ask for permission, is the heart of it, Martin. Among the OvaHerero I have worked with, authority over the dead runs by name and lineage, not by ministry or museum. Recognition that skips that line is talking past the people it claims to honor.

Sharp and necessary, Henning. The state-to-state frame is the problem: two governments negotiating over OvaHerero and Nama descendants, not with them, repeats the colonial habit of speaking about communities rather than to them.

Glad to see this field getting energy. Recovering Black Buddhist genealogies reframes a story too often told as white convert history. As so often in the history of religions, the real question is whose practice gets archived and named as tradition, and whose goes unrecorded.

A valuable corrective. Reading German colonialism across four centuries breaks the habit of treating it as a brief 1884 to 1919 episode. The entanglements through missions, trade, and science began long before formal empire and outlasted it. On my reading list, thank you.

An ivory-bleaching yard in Tempelhof, the same firm that fed Benin bronzes into Berlin. Colonial trade turned elephants and communities' sacred objects alike into commodities. Exhibitions that trace that chain, back to where the things came from, are the memory work that counts.

Love this line of work. In my Namibia fieldwork the lesson ran parallel: places become sacred by being tended, not found. Among the OvaHerero, the holy fire and the graves it faces make the ground what it is. Landscape as something kept, not just inhabited.

Great question. Alongside missions and movements, I would teach the sources problem: mission categories decided what got recorded as religion and what was filed under superstition. Reading those records against their own categories is half the course.
