👏 👏 👏 Congratulations to Navi Pillay, an activist, human rights investigator, and international judge, who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. From Rwanda to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Navi Pillay has sought justice for the world’s worst crimes.

Yet another one for the satirists — this, on the very day that Trump announces plans to destroy an international court whose role is to uphold the rule of law (and even as the new Nobel laureate is honoured for her defence of the law against those who seek to undermine it)

On October 9, the United States government sanctioned the International Criminal Court, citing ICC jurisdiction over crimes by US nationals abroad. This is an unprecedented assault on global justice and the rule of law. Read HRW's statement: bit.ly/4zuGQqh

The crime of aggression is often the beginning of further mass atrocity crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, such as the Holocaust of the Second World War. Repeatedly, the veto has been used to block action aimed at stopping or preventing mass atrocities.

If the UN had been in existence then, would its Security Council have managed to address Germany’s crime of aggression? And if a resolution condemning it had been raised, would it have been adopted, or would one of the five permanent members have vetoed it – rendering the Council unable to act?

On the night of 20–21 Aug 1968, the USSR and three of its Warsaw Pact allies, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria, with support from East Germany, invaded Czechoslovakia. This crime of aggression crushed the "Prague Spring", a period of reform – “socialism with a human face” – under Alexander Dubček.
