Correction: re-checking sources, we removed UPS's 2025 and 2026 cuts (no credible report tied them to AI; UPS cited lower Amazon volume) and regraded 3 others. Cuts only others tied to AI now hold 31% of jobs reported, not 42%. Employers called AI the sole reason in 23 of 254 cuts, not 26 of 247.

Of all 247 AI-linked cuts in our register, the employer called AI the reason, without other factors, in 26. Cuts only others tied to AI hold 42% of jobs reported. And New York asks in its layoff notices: no employer named AI in the first year. ailayoffs.org/are-companies-blaming-ai-for-layoffs

Are companies blaming AI for layoffs? Less than the headlines suggest. Of the 10 largest AI-linked job cuts in our register, not one employer said AI was the reason. UPS, Amazon, Verizon, TCS and Dell gave no AI reason, denied the link or gave conflicting accounts. #EconSky
Bar chart titled The 10 largest AI-linked job cuts, and what the employer said. In none of them did the employer say AI was the reason. UPS, Jan 2026, up to 30,000: named no AI reason; Oracle, Jun 2026, about 21,000 (press figure, net change in headcount): named AI among other reasons; UPS, Apr 2025, about 20,000: named no AI reason; Amazon, Jan 2026, about 16,000: named no AI reason; Amazon, Oct 2025, about 14,000: gave conflicting accounts; Verizon, Nov 2025, about 13,000: denied the AI link; Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Jul 2025, about 12,000 (press figure): gave conflicting accounts; Dell Technologies, Mar 2026, about 11,000 (press figure, net change in headcount): named no AI reason; Accenture, Sep 2025, about 11,000 (press figure, net change in headcount): named AI among other reasons; BT Group, May 2023, about 10,000 (includes contractors): named AI among other reasons. The largest cut an employer declared AI-related: Allianz Partners, about 1,500 (July 2026). Source: AI Layoffs register, 247 cuts linked to AI since May 2023.

How we count: a job counts only when the employer, or reporting it cites, says those roles were cut. Where a company says it is applying AI is not a cut. Re-reading the sources under that rule changed the jobs on 68 of the 119 cuts we had recorded jobs for. ailayoffs.org/what-jobs-will-ai-replace

Which jobs are AI layoffs hitting? In 85 of the 183 cuts where the employer named AI as a reason, it never said which jobs went. Where it did, software engineering comes up most (46 cuts), then management layers (28) and sales and marketing (27). Frontline and manual work: none. #EconSky
Bar chart titled Which jobs AI-linked layoffs hit, in employers' own words. Of 183 cuts since 2023 where the employer itself named AI as a reason, 85 did not say which jobs went. In the other 98, the kinds of job named: software engineering and IT 46, management layers 28, sales and marketing 27, corporate functions 25, customer service and support 20, operations and back office 16, product and design 16, writing, editorial and translation 9, frontline and manual work 0. We wrote up what the register shows in a working paper. Of 358,974 jobs in all the figures reported for layoffs linked to AI since May 2023, 59,454 (17%) are in cuts where the employer named AI and gave the number or a share of its published headcount. ailayoffs.org/research/counting-ai-layoffs
Bar chart titled Jobs in AI-linked layoffs, three ways of counting. For 243 layoff events linked to AI from May 2023 to September 2026: every figure reported, 358,974 jobs; the employer named AI and gave the number or a share of its published headcount, 59,454 (17%); weighted by evidence and whether the cut happened, 19,471 (5%). 13 of the 84 did not hold up, and in 15 more only the press linked the cut to AI or the company denied AI was the reason. The 71 with a sourced AI link are now in our register. We then checked 2025 the same way. The register now holds 243 events, each with its source. ailayoffs.org/events

We checked 84 layoffs from 2026 that other trackers or news reports count as AI cuts, and that our register had missed, against what each employer said. 56 had the employer naming AI. Only 20 also came with a number of jobs it stated or a share of a workforce it published. #EconSky
Bar chart titled What employers said about 84 layoffs listed as AI cuts. Of 84 layoffs from January to August 2026 that other trackers or news reports count as AI layoffs, 71 had an AI link that could be sourced, in 56 the employer itself named AI, and in 20 the employer also gave a countable number of jobs. Across the whole economy, AI doesn't show up yet: job cuts US employers attributed to AI this year equal less than 1% of all layoffs and discharges (Jan to Aug, BLS JOLTS). Our new page tracks the signals that would change that. ailayoffs.org/is-ai-causing-unemployment

Recent US college graduates have been more likely than the average worker to be unemployed since January 2021, almost two years before ChatGPT. The gap has widened since: 0.6 points when ChatGPT came out, 1.6 points by June 2026 (5.7% vs 4.1%). New York Fed data. #EconSky
Line chart of the unemployment rate of recent college graduates (ages 22 to 27) minus that of all workers, January 1990 to June 2026, from the New York Fed. The gap was below zero for most of the period, reaching about minus 3 points in late 2009, crossed above zero in January 2021, stood at plus 0.6 points when ChatGPT was released in November 2022, and reached plus 1.6 points in June 2026.

What changed: figures we had not recorded, now set aside (Oracle's 21,000, Dell's 11,000), and numbers companies did state, now counted (Meta's ~8,000 in its quarterly filing, Visa's 2,600 from a spokesperson on the record). Every change: ailayoffs.org/methodology

Correction to this thread: we re-checked about 55 events against their sources today. For 2026 the register now has 161,292 roles reported in AI-linked cuts worldwide, 36,160 where the company itself named AI and stated the number, and 11,169 weighted by evidence. 116 events in all.

The millions you may have seen are estimates of jobs AI could affect, not counts of actual cuts. Each of the 111 events in our register since 2023 links to its source, set-aside cuts included. The register holds only public, sourced cuts and is not exhaustive. Corrections welcome.

How Many Jobs Has AI Replaced? | AI Layoffs
A source-cited answer, updated live. Employers have named AI in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs, far fewer than the millions often claimed. Here is the honest count, an independent cross-check, and what the number leaves out.

For 17,620 of the 20,390 roles, the company named AI alongside other reasons, so they weigh less: Block's February 2026 cut of 4,000 counts as 1,600. Cloudflare's May 2026 cut of 1,100, with AI as the stated reason, counts in full. The 7,356 is a weighted sum, not a count of people.

Of those 87,478 roles, we set aside 67,088 (77%). Most are from two January 2026 cuts: UPS (up to 30,000, planned) and Amazon (about 16,000). Neither company's January announcement named AI as a cause. Microsoft said the roughly 4,800 roles it cut in July "are not being replaced by AI."

How many jobs has AI replaced? The head counts we record for AI-linked cuts in 2026 total 87,478 roles worldwide, mostly where the company did not blame AI. Where it named AI itself, we count 20,390, or 7,356 weighted by strength of evidence. ailayoffs.org/how-many-jobs-has-ai-replaced #EconSky
Horizontal bar chart: roles in job cuts linked to AI, worldwide, 2026 to date, from the AI Layoffs register of public, sourced cuts, recomputed September 30, 2026. First bar, all head counts we record: 87,478. Second bar, roles counted where the company itself named AI: 20,390. Third bar, the same counted roles weighted by strength of evidence: 7,356, a weighted sum, not a number of people. Weighting discounts weaker sources, cuts where AI was one of several reasons, and cuts not fully carried out. The other 67,088 reported roles are set aside, mostly because the company did not name AI as the cause or denied it. The register is not exhaustive. Source: ailayoffs.org
