Are companies blaming AI for layoffs? Less than the headlines suggest. Of the 10 largest AI-linked job cuts in our register, not one employer said AI was the reason. UPS, Amazon, Verizon, TCS and Dell gave no AI reason, denied the link or gave conflicting accounts. #EconSky

How many jobs has AI replaced? The head counts we record for AI-linked cuts in 2026 total 87,478 roles worldwide, mostly where the company did not blame AI. Where it named AI itself, we count 20,390, or 7,356 weighted by strength of evidence. ailayoffs.org/how-many-jobs-has-ai-replaced #EconSky
Horizontal bar chart: roles in job cuts linked to AI, worldwide, 2026 to date, from the AI Layoffs register of public, sourced cuts, recomputed September 30, 2026. First bar, all head counts we record: 87,478. Second bar, roles counted where the company itself named AI: 20,390. Third bar, the same counted roles weighted by strength of evidence: 7,356, a weighted sum, not a number of people. Weighting discounts weaker sources, cuts where AI was one of several reasons, and cuts not fully carried out. The other 67,088 reported roles are set aside, mostly because the company did not name AI as the cause or denied it. The register is not exhaustive. Source: ailayoffs.org
