Daily data fix! (Copernicus back up, my earlier post had an error). 18 Jan. global mean surface temp was 0.87°C above the 1991-2020 average. Adding the offset of 0.96°C, we find that 18 Jan 2025 is 1.83°C above pre-industrial. Not good.

Anyone like me, who can't get enough weather data? Go to climatereanalyzer.org and play around. Here is the NAM model (North American Mesoscale) at a resolution of 3km. This particular model is computed every 6 hours and gives temperature forecasts hourly up to 60 hours in the future.

NAM forecast model initialized at 18Z (1pm EST) Jan 17, 2025. This forecast is 60 hours in the future 6Z (1am EST) Jan 20. It shows a cold wave of air descending into the Eastern US.

Unfortunately, the daily data for temp anomalies has not been updated today on the Copernicus website. However, we can look at the global surface mean temperature forecasts for the next 7 days. Looking at the chart, and correcting for an approximate 0.2°C bias

The temp anomaly from Copernicus for 11 Jan is not available yet, so let's take a look at this from www.karstenhaustein.com/climate This shows the surface air temp anomaly forecast for the next 7 days. We find that the anomaly is expected to continue to be ~1.7°C above pre-industrial. 1/

Daily Data fix! Copernicus had a problem with their data for almost a week, but its all fixed now. 10 Jan had a global mean surface air temp 0.80°C above the 1991-2020 average. With the +0.96°C offset, 10 Jan was 1.76°C above pre-industrial. The first 10 days of Jan are ~1.71°C > pre-industrial.

This is the 7am balloon sounding in Nashville, TN. The columns are pressure in mb, height in meters, temp in °C, and dew point in °C. You can see it is below freezing at the surface, but above freezing at ~1000 meters, This "warm nose" of air may change the snow to rain or sleet later.

Tennessee, Kentucky, North Mississippi, Alabama & Georgia. Here is the 4pm EST NWS forecast for snow probabilities > 2" for the period 7am Fri. to 7pm Sat. 2" is what I consider the threshold for a real snowstorm, enough to cover the grass. Note that this is only for the 24 hour period.
