Looks fun. What was the task?

It’s my favorite time of year. Polynomial time in #MathToday Starting off with the painted cube problem. #Algebra2
Student whiteboard work showing a cube net with coloring annotation. Also a table recording the number of cubelets with 3,2,1, and 0 faces painted for various dimensions of cubes.Students constructing a cube frame out of snap cubes.

In #MathsToday my seniors read Francis Su’s speech to Harvey Mudd frosh and then wrote a page reaction. They generally enjoyed the reading and honored me with their personal stories and thoughts about math and caring for others. Here is the article they read.

Building the parallelepiped was the intro to working through the proof for finding the volume. Having it really helped students understand that the order of vectors in the triple product doesn’t matter since we can seat the solid any way we like and the volume remains unchanged. Plus it was fun!

Yes. Here are some screenshots of the cards. They just matched two together. This helped students review the verbal descriptions of what to do with the mathematical operations. It was the warm up task for class.
Four pairs of cards. First pairs is a vector product in words and in math speak, a cross product. Second pair is the volume of a parallelepiped with edges a, b, and c along with the math a cross b dot c. Third pair is two vectors and the description perpendicular vectors since a dot b is zero. Final pair are parallel vectors since a cross b is zero and then the actual pair of vectors. Sorry my descriptions aren’t better. Four additional pairs of cards. First pair is the area of a parallelogram with vectors given which matches to the magnitude of a cross product. Next pair shows the 3 by 3 cross product matrix along with the description of a vector perpendicular to two vectors. Third pair shows a dot b divided by magnitude a and magnitude b which matches with the cosine of the angle between vectors a and b. Final pair is a scalar product which matches with a dot product.

Really any math puzzles the students thought kids might like. It went great. Lots of high schoolers stopped by as well to try their hand. First semester we mostly prep for the AMC10/12 and local competitions.

One year our students made math booths and invites the elementary school next door over to visit during our students lunch period. We had a 3 foot square soma puzzle made out of cardboard boxes that the kids loved to play with. Made a Konigsburg puzzle out of yoga mats, created giant tan grams.

Made some parallelepipeds in #MathsToday as a visual aid for finding volumes using cross products. #parallelipipeds #MTBoS
Picture is taken from above of a group of desks pushed together. We see an open Zome Tool kit, a Zome parallelepiped, and various student detritus like notes and cards left over from a card sort.

Working on multiplying matrices in #MathsToday #Algebra2 #iTeachMath
A whiteboard showing student
work on multiplying matrices. You can see the arm of a student holding a whiteboard marker pointing to something in the work as they discuss. The whiteboard work includes multiplying a 2x2 matrix by a 2x4, writing the matrix dimensions checking to see if they can be multiplied, and multiplying a 3x1 matrix by a 1x3 matrix.

Students will tie knots in the ropes and measure the length after each knot is tied. The ropes are different thicknesses so they will have different slopes. The intersection will tell them how many knots need to be tied so that the different ropes are the same length. 😀

There are roughly 40 lengths of cord with their ends melted. Half are 1/4 inch thick and fluorescent yellow. The other half are 3/16 inch thick and colored white with grey stripe. In the photo is the lighter which melted the ends to keep them from fraying.

In #MathsToday, the Seed Numbers task. This group found working backwards helped. An excellent task to spike curiosity, problem solving, and review linear equations.
Student whiteboard work includes 9 sequences that have 100 as the 5th number, when generating numbers by adding the previous two. An example includes -91,94,3,97,100. All the sequences are written backwards with 100 as the first number. Students also plotted the first two numbers of each sequence as an ordered pair revealing a line. Also work around finding the slope and linear equation.

I mean, we bought a regular bed, and just threw the mattress on the floor. Didn’t set up the bed frame until they were a bit older. Worked great , was cheap, and no stress.

Worst notation? Definitely -1 for inverse. Students have just learned x^-1 means 1/x, so why would we use sin^-1 to mean arcsin? They forever confuse it with the reciprocal, which means cscx is now confusing… does it mean inverse as well? So many frustrations.
