🏔️ Next EPSP Connects Virtual Science Talk: Michael Robinson (UNR) on how ridgelines record erosion rate up to a threshold slope! 📅 Oct 14 · 11:00 ET / 08:00 PT Pre-register: bit.ly/EPSP_OCT26 #EPSPConnects #AGUEPSP #Geomorphology
Wide flyer on a dark blue background with faint topographic contour lines. Header: “AGU EPSP Connects Virtual Science Talk.” A circular photo outlined in yellow shows Michael Robinson, a smiling man with glasses and a backpack in front of cloudy mountains. Below, his name and talk title appear in yellow: “Ridgelines record erosion rate up to a threshold slope.”

On the right, the abstract: Ridgelines, the along-ridgetop profiles of drainage divides, occur on almost every landscape on Earth and other rocky planets but have received little study. Geomorphologists have long used rivers, hillslopes, and hilltops to infer tectonic and climatic history, but this approach hasn’t been applied to ridgelines. The talk develops a theoretical framework for ridgeline morphology and tests it against analog experiments and natural landscapes. Results show that below a threshold uplift rate near 1 mm/yr, area-normalized ridgeline slope steepens with increasing uplift. The transition from fluvial to debris-flow dominated channel networks causes this threshold.

An orange banner at the bottom reads “Pre-registration required. Sign up here!” with a QR code and the link bit.ly/EPSP_OCT26. Date: Oct 14th, 2026, at 08:00 San Francisco, 11:00 New York, 17:00 Berlin, 20:30 New Delhi, and 23:00 Beijing. Bio: Michael Robinson is a hydrology PhD student at the University of Nevada, Reno, working with Professor Joel Scheingross. He uses high-resolution topography to study drainage divide migration, river branching, and ridgeline evolution, and uses flume experiments to study autogenic waterfall formation. He was previously a hydrologist at the USGS Arizona Water Science Center. He will start as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley in late 2026.

🌊 Sediment transport + biofilm + EPS = a fascinating Virtual Science Talk this month! Dr. Stephanie Dohner (US Naval Research Lab) and Dr. Judy Yang (U of Minnesota) are teaming up on November 19 to talk about how tiny microbes and vegetation influence massive coastal processes. bit.ly/EPSP_NOV25
Two scientific talk abstracts on a blue background with wavy topographic patterns. Top abstract titled 'EPS, EPS, every where: Noncohesive seabed evolution with ecosystem impacts' describes how exopolymeric substances (EPS) in marine environments contribute to carbon sequestration and sediment transport, focusing on biocohesion and bioturbation impacts on sediment mobility and seabed roughness through in situ and laboratory experimentation. Bottom abstract titled 'Multiscale Fluid, Sediment, and Biota Interactions in Aquatic Ecosystems' discusses using microfluidic and flume experiments to investigate biofilm dynamics, sediment transport, and hyporheic exchange, revealing how microbes and vegetation influence sediment stability, geomorphic evolution, and pollutant transport for erosion control, water quality, and ecosystem health. Bottom section contains partial speaker biographies.

We are “likely to succeed on the merits” said the district judge in the order on Friday to temporarily halt the Administration’s mass firings across federal agencies. The government has until tomorrow to produce their comprehensive “large-scale” plans to the court.
