My Lord of Plagues! Ready to hand out some very lovely gifts before Christmas (spoiler alert, it's diseases). That's him, a Sorcerer, 10 Rotswords, 3 Sloven Knights, and some big deamon chap with the moth wings I have now. #warhammer #wargaming #warhammerageofsigmar #ageofsigmar #AOS

Had a bit of a model making day today. Built all my Rotswords and the harbinger of decay, but the chaos warrior models I got wasn't enough to make a reinforcement for them. So I made them as chosen for Warhammer 6th ed. This is the Chaos Lord I made. Any ideas for a name? 😅

Gripping Beast have announced they'll be closing down, and retiring. Absolutely gutted about this, as they were one of my favourite companies to buy minis. My whole Late Roman army is GB.

With this session, I have painted every single LOTR High Elf in my Collection. 100% complete 😁 Just begs the question: what should I focus on next? Option A: Mordor Orcs Option B: War of the Roses Army Option C: Epic Celtic Army Option D: Portuguese Napoleonic Army

Today was a chance to see how many I could paint in a single, hour and a half session. To my surprise, it was 8 high elves. Less than half of what I hoped for 😁 #wargame #wargaming #MESBG #LordoftheRings #warhammer
Using Polished Silver, Magic Blue, Dark Wood, Grim Black, Hardened Leather, Runic Grey, and Crusader Skin. All Army Painter paint markers. The grey undercoat was great for the armour and cloaks, but not so much for the faces and hands, which I needed to go over with a white paint (using AK Real Colour's White marker pen).

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Turn 7. The Royals Commander blinked first. Seeing the numbers left to him, he realised that it was only a matter of time before they are overrun by the enemy. "Withdraw," he ordered quietly, then turned away bowing his head as he withdrew. #wargaming
The end of the battle, and the final number of Ognonian Royals left. Just 4 Companies and 1 cannon crew. Pretty much a whole brigade left.

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Turn 6 The riverbank sees the most ferocious fighting of the entire battle. It's become a battle of attrition, one the Republicans have the upper hand in. But losses are heavy on both sides. The question now is who would blink first... #wargaming
The end of Turn 6. The two companies that fled the last turn rallied, but were too far away to make any difference.

The Royals destroyed many of the Rep Companies, but suffered heavily in turn, many on the verge of breaking, while the Reps were pretty much at full strength, helped by the cover of the hill and the forest. All but 1 6pdr gun on the Royal side was destroyed in the battle. As were several of the companies holding the river. But the companies on the left were still intact and began to manoeuvre to block the enemy from crossing.

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Battle Report: Turn 5 Things go from bad to worse for the Royals. Under the onslaught of the Republicans, several Companies are broken and destroyed. Two more fail their Courage Tests and flee to the edge of the battlefield.
By the end of Turn 5, two companies had failed their Courage Tests and were fleeing, stopping just before the end of the mat. The light company on the royal left was destroyed by heavy fire. The company on the far left, still retreating from the battle, was shot in the back and scattered.

The remaining companies suffered badly, took taking several hits. The Company just after it took an effective volley in its back. If would be destroyed after this.

Age of Warlords: Era of Firepower Turn 4. Just as it seemed the battle was completely in their favour, Turn 4 ended in a complete disaster for them. The counter attack on the Reps ended with one Company wiped out in heavy fighting and one fleeing for the far end. It left the whole flank open now.
Turn 4 started with the two companies of Royals advancing 6" from the hill, then moving into a charge against the Rep company closest. While successful, the Reps hit them with point blank volley fire, decimating the front ranks of the Company on the left, before they made contact. The Rep company behind charged in after, becoming a 2v2 brawl. The rest of the battlefield was becoming more challenging for the Royals. Having superior numbers at first, their poor accuracy has allowed the Reps to fix them in place, while moving up the rest of the army to begin firing on them.

The rest of the battle along the riverbank would turn into a ruthless attritional slog. The loser being the one who would blink first. On the far left, a heavy brawl began on the slope of the hill. Despite numerical and morally superior forces, the Royals were fighting uphill, which gave them a major disadvantage in Close Quarters... After some brutal fighting, the dust settled, and though the Republicans suffered badly, with one Company suffering 28 damage to their Courage, and therefore being destroyed, the Royals suffered worse, with the Company on the left being destroyed, and the company on the right failing their Courage Test and fleeing from the Reps.

In an instant, the tide of the battle suddenly swung away from the Royals...

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower: Turn 3 The Royals began moving on their left; two companies were sent to launch a counter attack to stop the Reps from crossing the river in force. In the center, the fighting grew fiercer as more Reps made it to the front. #wargaming #miniwargaming #miniatures
The Movement Phase saw the initiative again to the Royals. The Ognonian Commander decided that the best form of defence is attack. He ordered two companies on the far left to move up and take the hill next to the river, and block the coming enemy from turning their flank. The Republicans continued to move up in force, this time more organised than their initial moves. But the shooting phase from the Royals saw heavy casualties inflicted on the Reps, enough to wipe two whole companies. The companies on the right suffered heavy casualties as they moved off the hill. The Royals didn't get all their way. A heavy volley from the infantry and cannon fire decimated the skirmisher company in the field, breaking it from the battle. The skirmishes on the Royals' left suffered too, and had to take a Courage Test to see if they would stay. Fortunately, the Ognonian Warlord had enough orders to rally them and keep them in the fight.

After acquiring the starter set for the speed paint markers, I got an evening to give Krondys another go. And it was a much more pleasant experience than the first attempt. More details in the alt text. Suffice to say, I will be using these and the AK real colour markers from now on. #painting
I started by going over the green and other rough patches with a Wraithbone paint I brought along with me. While I waited for those to dry I tried the Overlord Grey on the hair. I was very pleased with the results as it made the dragon look older, wiser.

Then I used Polished Silver on the armour trims. But due to the red, it came out looking more bronze in appearance. Turned out I was totally okay with that, as it looked super cool.

For the membrane between the wings I used Berserker Bloodshade, a shade paint from Warhammer. I wanted to use purple, but couldn't get hold of one, so this did. And again, I loved it a lot.

For the bottom of the tail and the underside of the dragon, I went with Hardened Leather. I also used it for the claws on the feet and the wings.

Lastly, I went over the yellow with another coat of Zealot Yellow. The one paint I found so far that needs more than one coat over it to actually look okay.

And fini! After a few years in white, I have a fully painted dragon model done in a couple of hours.

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Battle Report: Turn 2 Shooting Phase The forward Republican Units were fired upon with brutal efficiency but the Royals. Rank upon rank firing effectively, with accurate cannon fire. The Republicans responded, making several hits, but a brutal firefight now ensured.
With the only enemy units in range, they were the most likely of targets. Companies can only target the closest models to them, unless they roll a discipline test to target something further.

Casualties in the game are recorded with small dice, and are based on killing off a Company's Courage (a Company of 20 regular Infantry has a Courage value of 26, so when the damage a Company has sustained is 26 or greater, it is destroyed).

Here, the Republicans suffer a total of 35 damage to their courage, split between different companies. The Courage Phase saw the Company with 21 damage on it to take a Courage Test, but thanks to the Warlord's Rally Order, it passed automatically. The Republicans fired back, but the greater defensive position of the Royals meant casualties were light in the initial volley, with only 6 damage to one regular company, and 4 to a light company.

Getting a successful hit on a target, reduces the target's courage by -2 (because getting hit by musket and cannon balls is far scarier than being hit by a sword, apparently).

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Battle Report: Turn 2 The Royal Army seized the initiative and made the first moves, getting the skirmishers into cover, while moving up the brigade on their left. The rest of the army held positions. #solowargaming #wargaming #wargames #miniatures
Turn 2 saw the Royal Army seize the Initiative from the Republic, rolling a full 12. With the Republican Army in disarray, they could have seized the opportunity to wipe out the whole enemy brigade in front of them. Instead, the Commander decided to hold position and use his orders to better the firepower of the troops. Only the brigade on the left moved fully up, ready to hold the pass along the river.

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Turn 1: Movement Phase The Kingdom of Ognon began to act, and performed way better on their orders, despite a lesser commander. Most of the army held back, fearing not to get into artillery range, while the skirmishers moved up to take cover. #wargaming
The Movement Phase saw the Royal Army hold their positions mostly; the Commander decided to bait the enemy to come to him; as the invader after all, they are the ones to clear the field!

The only moment from the Royals was their light infantry companies, and every single one was successful. The Light Infantry moved up into the fields, behind stone walls and into the woods.

Age of Warlords Era of Firepower Turn 1: Movement Phase and Shooting Phase. The Republican General orders a rapid advance over the fields and treeline, intending to rush the enemy with overwhelming numbers. But the orders go badly, with only one brigade, the centre line, moving forward. #wargaming
The Movement Phase begins with the Warlord issuing the order "The Brigade will Advance!" Up to 5 units can be selected and make up to 3 moves (1 move = 6" for infantry, 10" for cavalry).

But despite needing a 3+ to successfully order, all but one failed. So one Brigade got the order and made 3 moves (18").

It was a hot morning in June, and an Army of the Republic of Peoria marched along the roads, further into enemy territory. The sun was bearing down, and the humidity was starting to take its toll. But the army was in high spirits, having crossed the border at dawn, and no resistance so far...
The Battlefield today, all 2D terrain pieces, while looking flat, looks more interesting than a plain mat. The rocky terrain are hills, the fields are as is, the river is impassable save from a few ford crossing and the main bridge. And the foam cut pieces are all dense forests. The Republican Army of Peoria formed into a battleline.

The army is 3 bridges, like the Royal Army of Ognon, equipped with 3 6pdr guns, but have 5 line infantry companies each. The Warlord is considered an Excellent Commander with a whopping 15 orders to carry out!

My thoughts on the Army Painter Speed Paint Markers are as follows... They're fun! Thank you for coming. But seriously, I have a few thoughts after testing the introductory set, which includes three colours (green, red and yellow) on my first victim; Krondys.
Krondys the "yellow" dragon. Using the paint pens from the introductory kit, I painted yellow for the main body, red for the armour, and green for the underside. Though I might remove the green and keep it the beachy white.

For those writing rules or using point systems for making armies for games, how basic do you like it? Do you like a big set of models worth a single point, or you prefer each model is worth a certain number of points, and it rises depending on what you equip them with?

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 4: Combat Phase If the previous turn hadn't sealed the Normans' fate in this battle, this turn certainly did. Combat, while not entirely one sided, pretty much ended any question of the Romans' Victory. It was just a question of how much. #wargaming #wargame
The Combat Phase was a pretty bloody affair for the largest unit on both sides, the light spear infantry. The Normans struck first, felling more of the Roman infantry, leaving them down to just 6.

The Romans did better, killing way more of the Normans, leaving the unit to just 5 left. The Morale Phase will decide who emerges from this clash victorious. In this combat, the Romans performed worse. Despite being heavier infantry than their adversaries, they lost more men to the blows of the Norman swords, and were forced to give ground. But they would still hold the line, for now. The Cavalry charge in the previous Charge Phase (missed, I know, but these were the main charges of the turn), rammed into the two heavy axemen. And despite landing a few blows on the horsemen, it wasn't enough to kill them. While they in turn are hacked to death by Roman spears.

After wiping out the most expensive unit of the Norman host, the cavalry reorganized and prepared to face the two infantry units advancing upon them. The far right of the Roman line saw a blood bath. The heavy cavalry performed poorly against the lighter sword infantry, who managed to kill 3 of the 6 members of their unit. But the Romans also brought their attackers down to half strength, too, meaning both sides would have to take a morale check in the next phase.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 4: Shooting Phase The luck of the Normans went from bad to worse. The Normans performed terribly in shooting, with no hits, while the Romans' were brutally effective. Things were looking grim for the Normans now... #wargames #wargaming #historicalwargaming
The Norman Shooting Phase can be glossed over as they failed to kill anything this turn.

The Romans, however, had fortune on their side. The horse archers went first, targeting the medium armoured spear unit that was moving to the right. But a poor dice roll meant that only one norman was felled.

Then it was the unit of foot archers. Thanks to some rerolls, every model scored a hit, and every single roll to kill was successful too. The unit of 10 armoured normans went down to just 1. Brutal...On the left side of the Roman line, the archers tried to finish off the heavy axemen, but were unsuccessful. But it was okay, for the cavalry were given the order to finally get stuck in.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 4: Movement Phase. The Norman Warlord started with a rapid order, commanding that the largest unit of the army split up and attack the flanks. The Romans then repositioned themselves, with the swordsmen breaking off and the cavalry moving up. #wargaming
The 4th Turn began with the Norman Warlord splitting his largest unit, the 20 model spearmen unit in medium armour, into two units of 10, with one covering the right flank and the other moving to the left. It was a bold decision, especially with the archers behind in decent range to shoot at them.

The Romans began their Movement Phase with the Swordsmen Unit falling back out of combat, using the Warlord Command of Break Off! (Which allows the unit to fall back without taking a Ld Test). The Norman Infantry in the rear of the main battleline moved up, clearly attempting to flank around the line and hit the archers in the rear. The Roman Commander saw this move, and ordered the Archers to concentrate their shots on them. The Norman Medium Armoured Spear Infantry, splitting up into two new units and moving to the flanks. On the far right of the Roman Army, the Heavy Cavalry, the Cataphracts, reform themselves to be ready to charge into the infantry in front of them.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 3: Morale Phase The Norman Warlord acted fast, sending out commands (or more precisely, threats) to his warriors on the cusp of routing. Because of this, nobody ran away; all remained to stand and fight. Thus, the battle would continue into the next Turn...
As the Morale Phase began, the Norman Warlord quickly used his final orders to the two units who had to take a Leadership Test.

The two handed axemen on the Norman right were first. As a unit of 8 Heavy Infantry, they had a Leadership of 9, but after losing 4 in a single turn, their Ld was down to 5, but with the Warlord command of Ignoring the Losses, their Ld was back to 9, which helped them to pass their Morale Check and carry on fighting.

The Spearmen in the centre was a harder challenge. Having started the turn with a Ld of 21 (the unit multiplies its leadership by 7 for any extra ten models in the unit. So for units between 21 & 30 models, their Ld was 21), then having lost most of their unit in The Shooting and Combat Phase, bringing them down to 9 models remaining, giving them a Ld of 11. Such losses were still not enough to break them, so they remained in the fight.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 3: Combat Phase (multi-thread) What started as an almost sweeping win for the Normans as they charged into the Roman line, with a heavy advantage in numbers and weapons, by the end of the Combat Phase, it was a disaster for them. (Read the alt captions for more)
As per the rules of the game, the Combat Phase begins with the Warlords of both armies (starting with the Attacker) using their commands to aid their troops in battle. Once the orders are given out, then the Attacker selects which combat to begin with, fighting that round, then the defender gets a go, and once both sides have rolled, casualties are then removed.

As Excellent Warlords, both had a great chance of getting what orders they wanted carried out, which would aid the charging party more than the defenders. To the Norman leader's horror, however, not a single one of his Commands reached their intended destinations. All three failed terribly.

The Late Roman Commander's rolls were better, getting to use most of his commands. But once that was out of the way, the combat started, with the two handed axemen being the first...The two handed axemen deal D3 attacks per model. When rolled for, they managed to get a whopping 20 attacks out of a max of 24 (not bad)!

But with the medium infantry in Tight Formation, it wasn't going to be easy. They'd usually hit on 3+, but with Shields, it goes to a 4+, and then in Tight Formation, it goes to a 6+. So they rolled, and... Only one blow got through, killing one Roman warrior, who failed his 3+ Parry Save

The Romans had their turn, with a whopping 18 attacks coming in, they hit the infantry on a 5+ (heavy infantry + shields), getting many more hits on the enemy. The parry save was a 3+, so easy to get, right? Wrong! Four failed their parry saves, too many blows coming in, and thus 4 Normans met their end.

With the combat over, the casualties were removed, and the axemen were pushed back, the late Romans going forward. Having lost 4 of their unit, 50% of their strength gone, they would have to take a morale save at the end of the turn.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 3: Shooting Phase and Charge Phase. Shooting was mixed, with the Normans not gaining as much success as the Romans did. But the Charge Phase was brutally efficient for the Normans, who charged forward and hit the whole Roman line with brute force! #wargaming
The Shooting Phase for the Normans was lackluster, with the crossbowmen finally getting to use their crossbows... But missed with every shot, aiming for the heavy infantry to support their comrades in front of them. The Romans, however, were more fortunate. 4 of the light sword infantry on the far right were eliminated, while 6 more of the Norman Spearhead was cut down, leaving only 15 left. It meant that they would have to take a morale test at the end of the Turn, as they lost 50% of their full strength now. But it didn't stop them from launching a successful charge! In fact, thanks to some good ordering from the Warlord, who ordered everyone to charge (gives everyone an 3D6 to charge), everyone that could charge, made it in.

This would be the make or break moment of the whole battle. If the Roman line broke here then there would be no chance to recover from it. Both Warlords had 3 commands left to use, and the Roman Warlord prayed that his would be heard and answered to.

AGE OF WARLORDS BATTLE REPORT Turn 2: Shooting Phase, and Turn 3: Movement Phase. The Romans had a successful Shooting Phase, felling several more of the enemy. But it wasn't enough to deter any to rout, and by the end of Turn 3's Movement Phase, the entire Norman force was ready to charge.
The Turn 2 Shooting Phase began with the horse archers having another swipe at the Crossbows. Despite their range, and the fact that they moved, a single hit landed on an enemy model, bringing him down! Out of 8 crossbowmen that started the battle, only 6 remained. But it wasn't enough to send them to flight. Next it was the time of the archers, who were focused on the Norman advance in the centre. The first archer unit on the right loosed their bows, but only one norman spearman was killed in the ensuing volley.

The archer unit on the left had a better time of it. They fired at pretty much point blank range, killing 8 more. Within a moment of astounding good luck, the norman spearhead was given a bloody nose, losing their entire front rank, and was wittled down from 30 to 21 men remaining. Yet it wasn't enough to break them yet, and a clash now seemed inevitable. Turn 3's Movement Phase, the Normans spent their time reorganising their army for the charge. The heavy infantry on the Norman right spread themselves into a single line, and moved as close as they could to their opponents.

The Norman Spearhead moved forward again, this time stopping inches away from the line of contact, but still failing to adopt a tight formation before charging. The only ones that did form up into Tight Formation was the medium sword infantry on the center left. They intended to charge into the heavy infantry in front of them and cleave their way through.

AGE OF WARLORDS Battle REPORT Turn 2: Movement Phase. With a roar on their lips, the Normans surge forward, goaded by their commander who marches alongside them. The Roman commander stands alongside his men, too, inching them this way and that to get into position. #wargaming #wargame
The Normans start their movement phase with another attempt to advance further. Fortunately for them, the roll was a success! The norman army surged forward in a single tide of steel, stopping about 12" away from the Roman front line.

The unfortunate side of advancing the whole army is that they are now unable to do anything else; too tired from running forward in a sprint. And worse, the units have failed to move into tight formation as they advanced, leaving them vulnerable to enemy fire. The Warlord shrugs; better to move quickly and get in quick, than to move like a tortoise and get cut to ribbons! End of the Norman Movement Phase. They're now within charge range of the enemy. But with the Normans waiting to reform, and the Romans unwilling to leave their shieldwall, they hurl insults at each other instead. The Romans simply spend their movement phase repositioning. The heavy infantry close in on the light infantry's right flank, while the horse archers form up behind. The heavy cavalry head right to close the massive gap that's opened up the far right.

With the whole Norman army having advanced, they again miss their shooting phase. Meaning the Romans will shoot again. Let's hope for their sake it's better than their last turn...
