Letterers are truly among the unsung heroes of comics and Simon’s one of the best in the biz.

This is what Eisner meant about comics turning letters into images. But it’s self-effacing. Most readers’ eyes would glide over these sound effects without realising just how much they’re immersing you that little bit more into the story-world.

My fave is this wavering line as Red sniffs the air. The letters are soft and organic, and that wavering tail conveys her probing the air.

The letters in the ricochet ‘pchow’ are narrow and jumpy. They feel high-pitched and fidgety, like shrapnel pinging in all directions.

Look at how he visualises the flat, mechanised ‘choooom’ of a shotgun by making the letters big and flat, but tilting like they’re firing in Red’s direction.

Bugsy Seigel’s famous Vegas hotel was, of course, The Flamingo. We went with the Peacock. And how can a gangster called Bugsy be anything else but a mutant rabbit? Whose surname is a famous rabbit dish. This stuff writes itself, I swear.

More Durham Red in @2000ad.bsky.social this week. We based Red’s jacket and skirt on Sharon Stone’s powder-blue Courrèges number from Casino (1995) as it went with the story’s ‘60s Vegas aesthetic. But with added stolen combat boots!
