Proverbs 9:1-12 (NKJV) reads:

The Way of Wisdom
Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table. She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding. “He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

Solomon shows Wisdom preparing a house with seven pillars, setting a full table with meat and mixed wine, and sending out an invitation from the highest places: “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” She calls those who lack understanding to come, eat, drink, leave foolishness behind, and live in the way of understanding.

He then notes that correcting a scoffer only brings trouble, while a wise person welcomes correction and grows wiser. A just person keeps learning.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Wisdom multiplies days and adds years of life. If you choose wisdom, the benefit is yours; if you reject it, you alone carry the cost.

This is basically an invitation to leave empty ways and find real life with the Lord.

Proverbs 9:13-18 (NKJV) reads:

The Way of Folly
A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.

This time, Solomon presents the opposite of Wisdom: a foolish woman who is loud, simple, and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house in the busiest part of the city and calls out to people who are simply passing by on their way.

Her invitation sounds almost identical to Wisdom’s: “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.” To those who lack understanding she says, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

But the person who accepts does not realize that the dead are there, and that her guests end up in the depths of hell.

Solomon ends the chapter by presenting two competing invitations: One leads to life and understanding; the other offers secret pleasure that ends in destruction.

WIP Demon Crimzon design. Demon with red eyes and a jagged tooth grin, whose skin color is a dark grey, matching the color of Crimzon's hoodie in his Origin story.

Demon Crimzon is a dark reflection of Crimzon, specifically Crimzon's Origin outfit, representing the voice in our head that encourages us to do something wrong, then shames us when we actually do it. In Crimzon's case, it encouraged him to become more brutal during the events of the Prologue, but shamed him when he went into a coma, mockingly reminding him that the criminals he hurt were still people.

The Excellence of Wisdom
Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart. Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge. Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

Solomon presents Wisdom as a woman who openly calls out to everyone. She stands in public places, (on the high hills, at the crossroads, by the city gates), raising her voice so no one can miss her.

She invites all people, especially the simple and those who lack understanding, to listen. Her words are excellent, true, and right. Nothing crooked or twisted comes from her. What she says is clear to those willing to learn.

Solomon urges us to value her instruction more than silver or gold, because wisdom is better than rubies; nothing we could desire compares to her.

True wisdom from God is not hidden or exclusive. It is available to everyone willing to listen, honest, and worth more than any material treasure.

Proverbs 8:12-21 (NKJV) reads:

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of the earth. I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice, That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.”

Wisdom continues speaking. She says she lives with prudence and discovers true knowledge and good judgment. The fear of the Lord means hating what is evil: pride, arrogance, crooked ways, and twisted speech.

Wisdom claims counsel, sound judgment, understanding, and strength as her own. Through her, kings reign justly, rulers make fair decisions, and leaders govern well. She loves those who love her, and anyone who seeks her diligently will find her.

With her come lasting riches, honor, and righteousness. What she produces is better than gold or silver. She walks the path of what is right and just so that those who love her may inherit real wealth and have their lives filled with good things.

Solomon presents Wisdom as both practical and deeply valuable, guiding good leadership, rejecting evil, and offering rewards that last far beyond temporary riches. Think about it: true wisdom never leads you astray. If it does, it's not really wisdom, is it?

Proverbs 8:22-31 (NKJV) reads:

“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primal dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men.”

Wisdom speaks of her ancient origins. The Lord possessed her at the very beginning of His work, long before anything was made. She was established from everlasting; before the earth, the oceans, the mountains, or even the first dust.

When God prepared the heavens, set boundaries for the seas, and laid the foundations of the earth, Wisdom was right there beside Him as a master craftsman. She was His daily delight, rejoicing always in His presence, celebrating the world He made, and finding special joy in humanity.

Solomon presents Wisdom as something woven into the fabric of creation itself; present, joyful, and intimately involved from the start, showing that true wisdom is as old and reliable as the world God designed.

Lastly, Proverbs 8:32-36 (NKJV) reads:

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord; But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”

Wisdom finishes her speech with a direct appeal: “Now therefore, listen to me, my children, for blessed are those who keep my ways.” She urges people to hear instruction, become wise, and not brush it off.

The one who listens carefully, watching daily at her gates and waiting at her doors, is truly blessed. Whoever finds Wisdom finds life and receives favor from the Lord. But the person who rejects her harms their own soul. Those who hate her are choosing a path that leads toward death.

Solomon ends the chapter with a clear choice: Wisdom is available and life-giving to anyone who seeks her consistently, while turning away from her is ultimately self-destructive. You may roll your eyes at this, and that's fine, but just remember, the difference between someone who's wise and someone who's a fool is simply listening. If someone tells you "If you hear something that sounds like a rattle, go the opposite direction.", and you choose to ignore that, you're gonna end up getting bit by a rattlesnake.

I'm gonna be honest and vulnerable here, I've been pretty depressed these past few months, and these past couple of days, I've been the closest to "checking out" in a long time. So, instead of the next chapter in Proverbs, I'm just gonna share this one verse and call it a day. Context in alt text.

Mark 4:9 (NKJV) reads:

And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

This short, powerful line comes from Jesus right after He finishes telling the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1–8). In that story, a farmer scatters seed that falls on four kinds of ground: a hard path, rocky soil, thorny ground, and good soil. Only the seed in good soil grows and multiplies. Jesus later explains that the seed is God’s message (the Word), and the soils represent different ways people respond to it.

When Jesus says, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” He is not talking about physical hearing. He is calling for something deeper: attentive, receptive listening with the heart. It's an invitation and a challenge; pay attention, open yourself, and truly take in what God is saying so that it can take root and change you.

Jesus urges people not merely to hear stories but to respond in faith and obedience. The Bible reveals the kingdom of God to those willing to listen.

For someone unfamiliar with Christian faith, think of it this way: Imagine a teacher sharing a story with a life-changing lesson. At the end he says, “If you’re really listening, not just with your ears but with your mind and will, then apply this.” It’s a call to engage personally rather than stay on the surface. Jesus wants people to move beyond curiosity into genuine understanding and fruitfulness.

This phrase appears elsewhere in the Gospels too, underscoring that God’s truth is available, yet it requires a willing heart to receive it. That's why it goes over people's heads so often. Many people read the Bible just to see what the fuss is about, and not to actually learn anything. They go into it with an unwilling heart and mind, and so, the only thing they take from it is that God is mean and cruel. They see His rules and refuse to see His reasons for putting those rules in place, which is out of love.

You will never understand it unless you read it with a desire to understand, not to criticize
