Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 06/10/2026To be fair Davy did suggest aluminum, though peer pressure sought consonance with sodium , potassium, etc. (His first suggestion was, apparently, alumium 🤣.) 010
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 06/10/2026What time would you like to be knocked up? (An anglicism that may startle many Americans.) 🤣 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I don’t doubt that is happening, even now. No need to wait for the later stages of the game. 🤣 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 30/09/2026After first milking the cow to get the wherewithal to make the butter, you’re well on your way to a roast beef sandwich. 🤣🤣🤣 001
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Here in suburban Southern California , e-bikes are a scourge (often migrating in herds to and from school); and normal distances, and limited public transport militate against “car-free” becoming a reality in my (likely limited) lifetime. 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 11/09/2026I believe I read them all, out loud, as bedtime reading for my daughter. Though, to be fair, by the last ones, she read them first, and then I got to read them out loud to her at night. 120
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Spell-check can police your inept typing; nowadays I feel i’m almost bilingual, though visiting the UK requires some re-acclimation, to be recognized as a former local . 101
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Almost 100 ppm higher than when I began my PhD in Sep 1984 (327.36 ppm)! 011
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Of course. The undesirable corollary is it made Greenland seem smaller, and we seem to have aspirations there. 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 06/09/2026So, even pedestrians ignore road signals yet get upset if they feel threatened while doing so. I guess foolishness is endemic . . . 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 04/09/2026No doubt only available at a French horse butcher? 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I think that limited numbers of senior women is the problem, with the corollary that they are thus in demand for committees, and consequently overworked. 100
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Perhaps some gene editing to ensure the seaweed migrates to over the Cariaco trench and sinks there? Of course it may need to learn to swim first . . . 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Surely they’ll wait until the previous road repairs are complete , and then dig them up to enhance the leak ? 010
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 17/08/2026Certainly speed cameras (eith number plate recognition) would like not identify you easily if you didn’t. 🤣🤣 010
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 17/08/2026I understand that a poll felt that cyclists should also adhere to such speed limits in central London. Of course, most likely do, where limited by fitness or lack of hills. 🤣 110
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Wind speed is a proxy for the rate of mixing of the water in immediate contact with the atmosphere, and the bulk water that was not in direct contact with the atmosphere. This resists change in the solution composition at the surface as CO2 is gained or lost, maintaining the difference in p(CO2). 120
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/08/2026The rate of transfer depends linearly on the difference in partial pressure of CO2 between solution and atmosphere (a function of T and the compositions of the solution and the atmosphere. Its dependence on wind speed is approximately quadratic, so this effect typically dominates. 120
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/08/2026If the “partial pressure” (or fugacity) of dissolved, unionized, aqueous CO2 is less than that of gaseous CO2 in the atmosphere, the solution will take up CO2 from the atmosphere; if it is larger, then the solution will lose CO2 to the atmosphere. 120
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Simplistically, the state variables you mention (temperature, salinity, pH, etc.) affect (1), while wind speed affects the rate at which the gas and the solution are in contact with one another, and this dominates (2). 120
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 08/08/2026there are two key aspects: (1) How much net CO2 needs to be exchanged for the aqueous solution (seawater) to reach equilibrium with the gas phase (atmosphere)? (2) What controls how quickly this occurs? 120

Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 24/07/2026my understanding , here in California, is that hourly paid workers who work 10 h days, are paid 2 of those hours as overtime. Thus my department gave up on “funny fridays” where we worked 80 h in two weeks, but with alternate fridays off. It was popular but became problematic once the laws changed. 000
Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 21/07/2026just checked, already follow. i look forward to your missives. 🙂 021

Andrew Dickson @agdco2.bsky.social · 19/06/2026In US academia, publication is the most important criterion for success. Of course being perceived as doing interesting science is key to getting an academic position in the first place. (But “interesting” is often in the eye of the beholder, and can seem a fickle basis for evaluation.) 000
