Mastodon. Re-inforced structure makes this thing an absolute zombie despite the XL engine and it still packs on a horrifying ammount of pod space for evil. The Prime's 2xERPPC, 2x Streak LRM-20 arrangement (because yes LRMs get streak now) is downright hateful.

The highest lead dosage they observed in dry food in their study appears to be a little under 100 ug/1000kCal. The most nutrient dense dry cat food I could find (Purina Pro Plan) is ~4.3 kCal/g. Assuming that food had that observed lead contamination it would still be <5% that accepted max level.

CLP has a history of junk science. Where they found each contaminant and huge %positive kinda give the game away here: they're detecting natural trace accumulations and screaming that everything has toxins in it. If they'd found something at a dangerous dose they'd lead with that.

Because it's a BS study. Clean Label Project isn't a trustworthy source and they're detecting and raising the alarm about natural accumulation of trace elements from soil and water. The super high %positive and what was found where gives the game away.

Satire needs an actual target it's attacking and 40 years of cruft and books has removed a lot of real commentary from 40k and replaced it with "hey what if this fucked up thing happened". The franchise can still do quite good satire and commentary (free warhammer crime) but its not automatic is all

I'm clearly not getting my point across here but that's not relevant to whether or not the setting is satire. Here’s a bit from a Graham McNeil interview that I think better explains my issue here

GM: That’s a discussion I try not to delve into, as it’s so easy to have your intentions misconstrued and weaponised. I certainly can see the tragedy angle, especially when you consider how close humanity was (in the latter days of the Great Crusade) to actually achieving what it set out to do. I’ve seen the satire argument trotted out over and over, but I don’t think it really holds water anymore. Sure, the early work written for 40k was born out of the 80s, when a lot of SF fiction was blatantly inspired by the policies of the UK government, the rule of Margaret Thatcher, and the state of the nation at the time. As time has moved on, the thing the writing was originally satirising has either been forgotten or wasn’t really known first hand by players younger than forty, so to continue to call it satire when what’s been written since either hasn’t gone back to the primary sources or is basing it on the books written after the books that were written after the books, etc. tend to lose that element over distance and time, so I don’t really consider it satire now of what it was satirising then. But I could see it as a cautionary tale of the current state of affairs, a reflection on rising autocracy around the world, since the Imperium pretty much follows the authoritarian playbook (albeit, the monsters and daemons it’s preachers warn of are very real…). I prefer to think of it simply as a setting for cool stories and games, as 40k isn’t advocating modelling behaviour on any one faction, as I certainly don’t think any of the forces in the 40k universe are to be emulated or overly admired as they all have terrible darkness in them. That it attracts a certain element of gamers who see something to glorify in the Imperium and use it as a means to promulgate abhorrent beliefs, just tells me that they don’t understand the setting at all.

My point is that while 40k is primed for social commentary and *can* be used to write quite good satire, you do not inherently get to call your book satirical because it features Cato Sicarius or whoever, and GW the corporation hides their heritage to avoid the consequences of their lazier writing

Avenging Son is illustrative of this. The Administratrum sections are undoubtedly satirical & do a good job at it! But they're also married into a larger conventional marines story that's mostly played straight & creates this tonal whiplash between the grim humor of paper wars & everything else.

No, I actually think "satire buried at the foundations" is the problem. You can't rely on people knowing The Deep Lore to understand the context of what they're seeing, the satire actually has to be pointed and present in the text.
