If everyone knows that the stressed stocks are going to catch up to AI, then why aren't they buying them hand over fist while they are so cheap? 🤔

I forget where it was, but I remember a university simultaneously dropping the requirement that students take physics in HS to get accepted, while making a big push to increase their number of engineering majors. It did not go well.

Isn't this when you're supposed to share one of your "that post didn't age well" screenshots?

My recollection from being down the hall from the guy processing the HST submission was that the number of submission increased exponentially as the deadline approached.

He's pretty much telling the insurance companies that his chalet is on the side of an active volcano but he expects them to insure it anyway because he's that important.

Can someone request to have a potentially hazardous asteroid named after them? Rather than going with the usual asteroid designations, I think it would be way more fun to see a headline that says "there's a 1 in 10 chance of Aaron f'ing some things up in 2030."

Not quite the same thing you're talking about, but the silliness of how academia is portrayed by non-academics reminded me of this: www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/bac...

This is so true. If it isn't my office or a classroom I normally teach in, I have no idea where it is.

Does anyone else see the irony in saying that someone did poorly on a cognitive test, but we trust them to have accurately remembered exactly what they ate over the past year?

I know people that have tried to use the AI built in to Zoom to take meeting notes and when they go back and check the notes, there's all sorts of errors.

Sorry to get radical but I don’t think it’s my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I don’t like any part of it, so I won’t. I’m missing out? Good, that’s what I want. You’re worried about me missing out? That’s fuckin weird, man.

I was thinking the same thing... unless these companies start paying people to check the AI tool output and make sure it is correct, this is going to end very badly. And if you need a person to check everything the AI tool outputs, there's a lot less value in the AI tool.

These monsters have worked for decades to create an America in which it's perfectly okay for civilians to walk around with a loaded weapon, and now they're saying if you have a gun at a protest, the state can murder you.

I'm disappointed that the stand up for science website is using an incredibly fake version of the famous Earthrise photo to accompany the declaration... the terminator on Earth is running east-west roughly following the equator.

There's a copyright in the lower left corner. NASA doesn't put those on their images, so this is not from NASA. This is an artist's rendering.

For those wondering, this image is not from Hubble. It appears to be a GALEX UV image (www.galex.caltech.edu/media/glx201...) that has had some brightness/contrast/etc adjustments.
