Forgiveness can be meaningful for some survivors, but it should never be a requirement for healing.

A survivor can release anger without excusing abuse, and they can choose forgiveness without choosing contact; boundaries still matter.

Awareness grows one conversation at a time, and those conversations can make a real difference. Keep using your voice long after the campaign ends. 💙 #CultAwarenessMonth

Thank you for standing with survivors during International Cult Awareness Month. Together we're building greater awareness, reducing stigma, and reminding people leaving high-control groups that hope—and help—exist.

Grief after coercive control is often invisible. A survivor may be mourning a community, a purpose, a relationship, or a version of themselves they once knew. Yesterday was Grief Awareness Day, so to survivors: your feelings are valid, you do not have to carry them alone. 💜🕊️

On National Thoughtful Day, remember that small acts of kindness can have a powerful impact on someone recovering from coercive control. A listening ear, a supportive message, or a safe connection can remind survivors they are seen, valued, and not alone. 💙

After leaving a high-control group, many survivors describe finding peace through reclaiming their voice and their choices.

Yesterday was Women’s Equality Day. Every survivor’s recovery journey is shaped by their lived experiences. For many women, identity, culture, and community can influence how coercive control is experienced and healed from. True equality means making space for every voice. 💙

Awareness isn't just for people who have experienced cults. Understanding influence, persuasion, and psychological manipulation can help us navigate relationships, workplaces, online spaces, and organizations with greater confidence.

High-control groups often present themselves as the only source of truth. Healthy relationships don't require giving up your ability to think critically or make your own decisions.

Critical thinking isn't about having all the answers—it's about being willing to ask questions, examine evidence, and remain open to new information. #CultAwareness

Recovery isn't about forgetting the past. It's about building a future where your choices are truly your own. Every new friendship, every boundary, and every independent decision is a step toward healing. 💙

Knowledge is empowering. Learning about love bombing, information control, fear-based messaging, and undue influence helps us recognize unhealthy dynamics—not just in cults, but in many areas of life.

One conversation can change a life. Sharing accurate information about coercive control may help someone recognize unhealthy dynamics or encourage them to seek support. Thank you for being part of that conversation. 💙

Healing is built through connection: safe relationships, compassionate support, and communities that respect your choices. No one should have to rebuild alone. If you're leaving Scientology or the Sea Org, we're here for you. 888-FREE-002

Many high-control groups isolate members from outside relationships because connection is powerful against coercive control. Scientology disconnection is a great example.

Recovery often begins with one person finding a safe place to ask for help. We want to honor the organizations, volunteers, donors, and advocates who make that first step possible. Together, we can help survivors reclaim their voices and their futures. 💙

Leaving a high-control group can feel isolating—but no one should have to rebuild alone. Nonprofits provide vital connections to education, advocacy, & recovery resources. Today, we celebrate the impact of community support. #NationalNonprofitDay

Disconnection is real. A member is declared a “potential trouble source” if they talk to someone who is critical of Scientology.

Dr. Margaret Thaler Singer wrote that thought reform works by changing a person's environment and experiences over time. That's one reason coercive control can be so difficult to recognize while it's happening. Education is one of our best tools for prevention.

Over time, cults employ coercive persuasion, thought reform, and undue influence—gradual processes that undermine one’s critical thinking and replaces it with compliance.

The Aftermath Foundation @aftermathfdn.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Supporting someone after they leave a cult doesn't require having all the answers. Patience. Empathy. Consistency. Those things matter more than perfect words. 💙

One of the biggest misconceptions about cults? That people stay because they "want to." The reality is that fear, coercive control, isolation, and emotional dependency can make leaving incredibly difficult. Awareness changes perspectives.

Many former members spend years untangling fear, guilt, and black-and-white thinking after leaving a high-control group. Healing isn't linear—and it doesn't have to be. 🤍

Cults often use isolation and control, which take place in a series of steps… Individually, the requests may seem reasonable, but they build up over time. ⏰

Stay aware 💭 Healthy communities welcome questions. High-control groups often discourage them. If asking honest questions is treated like betrayal, that's worth paying attention to.

I think more people need to understand that it can even happen to people you think are "too smart" for it to happen to. it happens to people who are looking for meaning and a place to belong, and that doesn't mean they're "stupid."
