She applied to college in secret, because in her family a girl’s education stopped at high school. Scholarships only — a loan would have needed her parents’ signature. Then her mother got to the mailbox first.

Dr. Vanda Seward left a job in corrections, went back to school, and came back to criminal justice with a doctorate and the authority to a run a statewide reentry program. She’s in law school now. Her memoir reached No. 1 in new Criminology releases on Amazon — in 48 hours.
