I’ve been tinkering with my own desktop environment built on Linux. still a long way to go but now it can update itself! gotta decide and commit to rounded or squared off windows and make it all match tho

My talk is done (enough?) -- Ready for my @rmrubyconf.bsky.social talk on Tuesday, a few weeks ago I too built my own slide deck maker + exporter and I just ran through it and it worked great 10/10. Looking forward to the conference after a rough day tomorrow at least Tuesday can be a bright spot!

A few years ago, I would have to have used some obscure react component to get a date picker to do what I wanted. Now I get my own custom web element exactly the way I want it.

I don't need it, but I want it. Switchfeed on iPhone Duo would be fun

Time to get some real users using Switchfeed.
Two email subjects reading “Switchfeed has been approved for beta testing” for macOS and iOS

I've been working on a native macOS (and iOS) app for posting and cross posting to Bluesky and Mastodon. One of my favorite features (besides cross-posting) is a unified timeline across both platforms.

It's coming together, the native social media app of my dreams so far. I think I might see about getting this up on the app stores. If you're curious this will also be on iOS and iPadOS too when i'm done with it (both of those apps are working too!)

Couple of tasty screenshots. Still very much WIP, no where near perfect. It's so fun to work on my isometric block game engine, I have so many ideas flowing!

I picked up my Block Game again this weekend, rewriting it in rust due to performance issues I felt with the previous system. Just specced out the prefab json definition and whew this is gonna be powerful! My previous block game v1 was a first-person view, but this go around I'm trying isometric

my next project is getting closer to being ready for non-me users. A replacement for a tool I use dozens if not hundreds of times a week. Screenshots and screen recordings + a way to share them.

every programming language needs a web framework and that framework itself needs a blog example, right?

One of the areas I wanted to improve with #Hanami was error pages Helpful errors and resolutions are super important for developers to remain productive and happy. ResolvableErrors is one thing your apps can include to keep yourself and your devs happy too. Builds off an all new error page comin

Working on RubyEverywhere.com still in the background after work, it's coming along. Docs are in progress and then a round of polish and bug testing. BUT the iOS and Android apps for the Jump app are working on my device. It's all coming together

ya know, this at one point was taking a whole second to run all my tests for this project. added a built in test slowness finder and optimized a few things and we're back to a reasonable (albeit slower) test run than before.

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 06/08/2026
Last week I started toying with an idea that will probably garner zero users other than me. As part of building this idea out, I needed to make running tests easy. The wild thing is this is one process running the tests.

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 06/08/2026
where we're going we don't need slowness.

that's a super fast test suite run

In both the iOS and Android versions of the Ruby Everywhere Jump app, you can preview your native apps on device, but like what do you do when you have native screens? Error? Be stuck on a constant loading bar because it can't load your native screens from another app? How about a message instead?

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 26/07/2026
I added a basic tui today for the RubyEverywhere.com CLI. Quick menu to jump to your app in an iOS simulator, Android emulator or a desktop app or even your browser. When you make a change that requires a relaunch of your app you can hit that platform's key and it'll rebuild, install and relaunch.

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 24/07/2026
Oh, you wanted native screens and to be able to drop into those? I gotchu covered.
010
Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 23/07/2026
Oh look ma, it's a native iOS app from my Ruby on Rails app with just a yaml file.

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 19/07/2026
Tonight I finished app updating for the desktop app + publishing with release notes support. You define your own route/view on your rails app (esp if deployed), it communicates with our JS bridge to the native app shell and can trigger updates/install/etc as needed. Can auto-install too if wanted

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 17/07/2026
dog foodin, I went from no desktop app -> a desktop app with 1 command to install it 1 set of edits to a yaml file 1 command to auth to the Platform 1 command to build the app on the Platform pretty dang cool.

I've been working on a promise to any users of this new thing I'm working on. A foundational key promise is that the core will always be free. I believe at the foundations that building your apps for all platforms should remain free if you've got the gumption to do the setup work yourself.

So I started codin' and here I am a few hours later and I have desktop builds with two modes, local where it compiles your Rails app -> a binary, that can start it up when you launch the .app it builds for you... and a remote which is a shell + bridge for remote deployments to web apps.

here's a few WIP shots of the potential dashboard for the first project at least, e-ink, e-ink dark and then a dark mode color for it

Andrea Fomera @afomera.dev · 04/07/2026
I've been mulling over building this for years for myself for future plans, and wouldn't have done it if I had to do this without letting an LLM handle it for me. This enables my electronic projects to leverage these connections via an API I'll expose later, letting them be super useful.
