I’m sure there’s plenty of overcooked veg in most countries in the world if you look, that doesn’t make it the norm. I live here now, I know what to expect from the food I’m served. I don’t expect overcooked veg.

It’s rare to see a paywall that doesn’t offer at least some free access per month.
000
Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 07/03/2024
I thought the person that I was replying to was suggesting a token to remove ads, maybe I misread it. Either way, the token for access thing will never happen. It just doesn’t make sense for publishers.

Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 07/03/2024
I know, but the point is that a paid token to remove ads is competing with tools that remove ads for free, so it’s unlikely that many people who are bothered by ads would even see them in the first place. You’re probably better off with just a digital tip jar.

The subscription model doesn’t. Why would anyone subscribe to an outlet that they think publishes clickbait?
000
Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 06/03/2024
Multi subs may have more legs if news orgs are able to agree to something like that.
000
Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 06/03/2024
As I say, pay per view is a complete non-starter, too little to gain and too much to lose in potential subscriptions. Plus, a PPV model would encourage writing clickbait articles. To convince someone to sign up to a sub, they have to trust that you’ll put out worthwhile stories.

Adblockers are free.

Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 06/03/2024
I expect that the vast majority of adverts that appear on spam sites do so with no knowledge from the advertiser that that’s where their ads are being placed.
020
Drewsky @afindlay.bsky.social · 06/03/2024
That’s not happening. Some publishers did experiment with micropayments for article access years ago, they all gave up on it. One person signing up for a subscription is probably worth at least 400 people paying 25c to read an article, and providing articles for 25c will undercut your subscriptions.

We’ve currently got a millennial PM here in the UK and it’s not going great. Although, our previous PM was Gen X and she crashed the economy within about 15 seconds of trying to do anything. Maybe we should give a zoomer a shot.

I’m a small-r republican, and generally oppose our monarchy here in the UK, but one point I read gave me pause: that splitting the ceremonial and diplomatic functions of being head of state from the political ones does offer benefits.

A guy is smoking weed with his buddy and says to his friend "Michael, I think we might be cartoon characters." Michael, worried says "oh shit, better call Baudrillard." Baudrillard answers the phone and says "haha, no boys. From our perspective, this is reality. The first man says "well, that's a relief. Michael says "thanks Jean". Baudrillard says "no problem, boys. Au revoir." He then thinks to himself "it is nice to be the real Jean Baudrillard."

I’m returning to this post as I’ve thought of something else that really bugs me in the app: no landscape mode on images when rotating my phone. When people screenshot text, I find myself having to move the image from left to right for every line.

I really miss the functionality in Tweetdeck where tapping the top of the screen scrolls you up to the top of your feed, but then tapping a second time returns you to where you were. I’m often accidentally returning to the top of a set of replies, getting back can be a pain. I’m on the iOS app.

I do wish the weirdo over the road would stop staring through my window. It’s creepy af.
A photo, taken through a window, of a house on the opposite side of the road. It’s dark, but one window on the house is lit up. If you zoom in enough, you can see a large, round, white, furry soft toy with a wonky smile looking towards the camera.

There’s a Chrome extension called Sky Follower Bridge which will search your Twitter friend list and compare it to Bluesky accounts. You still need to double check and confirm results, and it will result in some false matches, but it’s a good place to start.
