Like her previous film, MUSIC, Angela Schanelec’s MY WIFE CRIES leans heavily on a climactic sequence of musical performance. The difference is this time it’s the best thing in the film (or any recent film?) instead of the worst

I adored Nicolás Pereda’s EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOISE. Delightful formal play with a variety of cameras and sound recordings, compositions and performances on and off screen, and also it’s hilarious (I laughed out loud more than during anything else I’ve watched this year)

Oh fun! I found this particularly helpful in understanding phenomena that were historically central but don’t get talked about in terms of enduring masterworks—the British bourgeois world of neoclassical collectors/dealers, their relationship to Roman patrons and German theorists etc

In 1970 he got in trouble for a Navy Times article critical of the Vietnam war effort (that was the year he had 20 years of service and soon retired with career benefits to become a high school principal)
