Carrier’s Problems Linked To Attacks on Base by Iran

WASHINGTON — The aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln's supply problems began soon after the first day of the war, as Iranian missiles and attack drones fell on a Navy base in Bahrain.

The Iran attack, retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli assault on Tehran, destroyed much of the base. And as it went up in smoke, so did a major logistics hub that the Navy has relied on for decades.

The Navy needed a Plan B to continue feeding the sailors who were flying the missions, and planes flying the missions were also being subjected to a blockade of Iran's ports.

With the threat of Iranian attacks at other ports in the region, the Pentagon looked to be caught off guard. British command on the use of Diego Garcia as a staging hub in the Indian Ocean shrinks from where two aircraft carrier strike groups have been operating.

In the loss of the hub in Bahrain reported problems on carriers supporting operations against Iran.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, said a letter to Defense Secretary Esper highlighted that the Pentagon is focused on deteriorating conditions.

On Friday at a military air base nearby, the question was not how or why things might now seem broken, but rather what’s easy, simple.

Recently, Japanese-based carrier U.S.S. George Washington, which earlier this week was heading west through the Strait of Malacca in Indonesian waters on route to the Middle East.

Another carrier, the U.S. George H.W. Bush, has been operating in the Middle East for months since deploying from Norfolk.

But when asked if the carrier deployments were too much, the president said, “No, no, no, not nearly enough.”

Mr. Hespe had a similar response on Thursday when a reporter asked him to revisit the merits of the U.S. presence in the Strait of Hormuz.

That presence is crucial to protecting Persian Gulf shipping routes.

But the idea must be that once the U.S. response is shown to be harmless, it can be replicated in the region.

Meanwhile, Iran is likely to retaliate against the U.S. in several areas, one of which might be the Strait of Hormuz.

The Lincoln's replacement is the Japan-based carrier U.S.S. George Washington, which earlier this week was heading west through the Strait of Malacca.

Another carrier, the U.S. George H.W. Bush, has been operating in the Middle East for months since deploying from Norfolk.

But when asked if the carrier deployments were too much, the president said, “No, no, no, not nearly enough.”

**Carrier’s Problems Linked To Attacks on Base by Iran**
The loss of the Lincoln is causing major problems, as the Navy has said there are too few resources for the operations that have been tasked to fleets out of both regions.

As a base on Diego Garcia, south of the Maldives, is serving as a supply hub for the Navy now below the longer stretch of sea covered by the Sept. 11 attacks.

Ford’s 326-day deployment to the East has been severely impacted.

But in that war, carriers operating out of the Pacific might have been subject to the Guam hub.

While six months is the typical deployment for a Navy airman at any one at a time.
