Main bit of the crossing was totally fine, presumably because the weather continues to be absolutely sublime. Still got an hour to go until ashore and then back out on a smaller scenic cruise shortly after, can't have asked for a better introduction to the South Island

As an elections nerd obviously I snapped a quick photo of a particularly busy cluster of signs I did not at the time clock what had been done to Winston Peters and now I am howling

Oh oh oh! The takahē? Also super cool! It was assumed extinct for 50 years, and then they found some in the wild and brought it back from the brink. Sometimes we're good! We should save more species!

The tuatara are so cool - the local showing me about knew one lived next to a bench so got to see it separate from a fenced section where lots of them (including the one in the photo) live. They aren't lizards! They are a whole separate branch of reptiles, of which they are only survivor! COOL!

Very nice walk around the Zealandia wildlife reserve, saw all kinds of cool local creatures - the kākā, tuatara, takahē and tūī (okay I have seen lots of tūī this trip but this guy came right up close!)

Thrilled to report I have not been stood up on my second attempt to socialise (ahem, properly) with a local, check back later to find out whether my trip to a wildlife sanctuary is a delight or a bust

Absolute fuckin riddy all round, they managed like one whole calendar year where the Scottish Greens weren't embarrassed to be associated with them

Well they can't ditch the "Green" part as it's fundamental so there's really not any greater difference than can be established than "Scottish Greens" vs "Green Party of England and Wales"

Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Not the main issue but imagine the Scottish Greens will be screaming and banging their heads off their desks as lack of awareness that The Greens are not a UK Party but instead three (3!) independent parties means they end up eating shit as well due to people and policies they have no connection to

Grimly funny that GPEW managed about 6 months of serious improvement and then decided that was quite enough and it was time to step on every rake going, good work folks, there's only a climate crisis and rising fascism, nobody needed a successful party of climate action and social liberalism

Like for all the conspiracy theorising about YouGov it's never given me an impression of wishcasting the way MIC does, and like... why are you wishcasting for the right whilst emblazoned with a quote from the centre left? Weird weird weird weird weird!

I know I have flogged this horse for so long it's positively skeletal but I just find More in Common such a *weird* outfit: maybe it's fact most other regular polling firms aren't also think tanks but it just seems so fixated on laundering views and personalities at odds with its founding phrase

I do think it needs to be noted the way that Kiwis do bedding is perverted, they have a duvet and then they like... sandwich it between two sheets rather than have a single duvet cover??? Oh so you think you're too good for the rest of your washing to build a new life in the big sock?

The North Island is so wild, bus went through a rainforest a few days ago, today I'm going through a desert?! Not a classic sandy one, but an arid patch nonetheless. Makes sense why this area was picked for Mount Doom.

Reckon I could die laughing if 'electoral reform' amounted to the Supplementary Vote. Just the most egregious 'British approach to constitutional reform' possible. Little gained, new problems, actual reform delayed.

Unfortunately nothing would have stopped The Bad Motion that GPEW are about to deal with even with better prioritisation and fewer spots but yeah the UK's Greens need to spend less conference time on motions and more on upskilling and engaging members to, y'know, win elections

Hello, tonight's "light politics despite being on holiday" and "not my circus not my monkeys but I did used to be in another circus with related apes" post is "I think that whilst member-led policy is important to Green Politics, their conferences need less policymaking and general motion passing"

Sorry I did a pivot between posts: the first touched on the racial aspect of civic nationalism, but the second on the, well, national aspect of it.

Because it was, and framing it this way for emphasising the point, the Sassenachs! It would have been easy to say "the fuckin English settlers ruined it" but Scotland's civic nationalism means English-born Scots are accepted as a legitimate component of the Scottish People.

Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
You do in fact got to hand it to the Nats (institutionally - some small-n nats will always be awful) for being absolutely firm on an entirely civic national identity when it would have been so easy in 2014 to Quebec it and blame people born outwith Scotland for sinking the referendum

It's so darkly funny that an inherently Unionist English person - sorry, British person from beyond the Tweed - is definitely of a view that is one, anathema to Scottish Nationalists and two, if it wasn't and was something they espoused, would rightly be treated with absolute contempt

I have to admit I tried standard Whitakers and it was Perfectly Adequate 😱 Would definitely have again but it's not like Estonian Kalev where I raved about it so much a pal who went a decade later brought me some back

Important discovery: UK folk, remember Cadbury Caramel? With the mostly yellow wrapper? The sexy bunny mascot? The precursor to Dairy Milk Caramel? NZ Dairy Milk Caramel is a lot like the OG Caramel - runnier caramel, and even the chocolate itself gave me one of those intense taste timewarps

A second ice cream has hit the day Justifying this by the fact tomorrow is a Not Really Doing Anything day so no further treat opportunities - the bus (same one I got this morning to here, just continuing on) won't even have got me all the way to Wellington this time tomorrow 😱

See I thought that maybe the 90 mins turned out to be for the whole trail going beyond the falls but the sign back at the park does indeed say Huka Falls Walk 1hr 30mins! I'm used to beating advised times as gays walk fast but not by that much!

Absolutely lovely day for a walk along the Waikato River up to the Huka Falls - I could have put my shorts on it's that warm! Bet the people on the jet boats were a bit less toasty mind you

Okay so I have concluded that pasta is to be avoided in New Zealand. Just had a lasagne that was... oddly sweet, and last night had an arrabiatta which in the UK I would say is typically a "light" pasta really only with its sauce but here was loaded with baby corn that I had not invited

Very nice little cruise around Lake Taupō with views of Mount Doom (Mount Ngāuruhoe), the Māori rock carving of Ngātoroirangi, and Mount Tauhara which the skipper says is locally viewed as a woman lying down with her tits in the clouds (paraphrased)
