Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 5hDunedin station is truly absurd, Edinburgh Waverley station eat your heart out (okay I will grant you at least OG Edinburgh has a whole fleet of regular passenger services as opposed to solely tourist trains...) Very pretty here, making up slightly for the fact I have been stricken by a cold 091
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Phenomenal trip reminder email from InterCity Obviously I have the original booking email and know when and where my bus leaves but this is quite the glitch 1100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Had a lovely day at Akaroa, in addition to dolphins also saw some fur seals, very pretty little village in a flooded crater, glad I was so drawn to the oddity of geography 070
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Just been stood up the front of a boat whilst a pod of Hector's Dolphins played underneath us, absolutely magical 😭 (This video was a bit later, at the most spectacular point I was one, living in the moment and two, unwilling to risk feeding my phone to the Pacific Ocean) 0161
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 08/10/2026You are not 100% wrong as I am just coming down the road from its highest point in the Banks Peninsula 060
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Any time I look at this bit of New Zealand I am fascinated by this mountainous knob (the Banks Peninsula) next to some otherwise flat plains so this is today's adventure 5160
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Christchurch is nice but understandably also has a slightly odd vibe where there's some nice old stuff, some stuff that's in really bad nick, and then lots of incredible shiny new stuff This is old stuff because the new stuff is more commercial/residential, but it is a cool place overall 170
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Safely in Christchurch after a very lovely train journey - the first half of it when you weren't far from mountains of 2,600m+ at points was pretty fuckin cool 0100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Outrageous I took until day 11 to try it (imagine coming to Scotland and not trying Irn Bru), but this local drink is Quite Nice 010
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Choo choo! I very nearly lost my glasses over the side of the viewing car which would have been a disaster only surpassable if I dropped my phone over 150
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I saw someone post one of these on here quite recently - I thought this was a pretty well known and established gag by this point but everything is new to somebody Anyway just spotted this in Picton 030
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Good morning, I have certainly had worse views from holiday accommodation 0110
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Anyway despite barely spending any time on land here in Picton AND the morning being a ferry I have had an incredible day, honestly feel like my very soul has been rejuvinated by sea, sun and... sdlophins 040
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026"Party pledges to introduce PR, wins a majority, doesn't bother, ultimately gets completely destroyed" is one of my favourite songs, RIP CAQ 2234
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026DOLPHINS EEEEEEE I have a dedicated dolphin watching tour booked on Friday so BONUS DOLPHINS 1100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Once again near to tears from sheer joy, the sun is shining, the sea is bright blue, dogs are coming out to get a treat from the mail boat as it cruises round the Malborough Sounds, you simply cannot beat it, life is extremely good imo 1140
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Main bit of the crossing was totally fine, presumably because the weather continues to be absolutely sublime. Still got an hour to go until ashore and then back out on a smaller scenic cruise shortly after, can't have asked for a better introduction to the South Island 0110
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Goodbye, North Island! (Well okay I have one more full day in Auckland at the end but shhhh) 3120
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 05/10/2026As an elections nerd obviously I snapped a quick photo of a particularly busy cluster of signs I did not at the time clock what had been done to Winston Peters and now I am howling 2150
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Very nice walk around the Zealandia wildlife reserve, saw all kinds of cool local creatures - the kākā, tuatara, takahē and tūī (okay I have seen lots of tūī this trip but this guy came right up close!) 1171
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Had a nice wander around Te Papa earlier then went up another city centre hill for slightly different views, pure knackered now 070
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Lovely sunny day in Wellington though much chillier than it was inland! 281
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 04/10/2026You can't take photos on the Weta Workshop tour so here are some lads from the gift shop 1140
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I may be on the opposite side of the planet but I can't miss one of the most important days of the year 0160
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Today is just a bus in the rain day but here's a very sweet cat at the rest stop halfway to Wellington 0220
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 02/10/2026A second ice cream has hit the day Justifying this by the fact tomorrow is a Not Really Doing Anything day so no further treat opportunities - the bus (same one I got this morning to here, just continuing on) won't even have got me all the way to Wellington this time tomorrow 😱 0100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Absolutely lovely day for a walk along the Waikato River up to the Huka Falls - I could have put my shorts on it's that warm! Bet the people on the jet boats were a bit less toasty mind you 020
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 02/10/2026A walk I thought would take 90 mins took 30 and there is ice cream at the end of it, so that's a pretty good afternoon in my view 1100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Very nice little cruise around Lake Taupō with views of Mount Doom (Mount Ngāuruhoe), the Māori rock carving of Ngātoroirangi, and Mount Tauhara which the skipper says is locally viewed as a woman lying down with her tits in the clouds (paraphrased) 2100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Praise be to a local backpackers hostel which was like yeah sure we can watch your luggage for $20 (£9), lifesavers, means I am all sorted for my wee lake cruise 120
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Idk maybe I'd have told the bus company they need to update their website, seems quite a big change 100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Still cool to see the less dramatic activity, but admittedly a wee bit disappointed that an hour of waiting - after it had def not fired for like 40 mins before that - was not rewarded with a full eruption before I had to leave Te Puia! Ah well, c'est la vie innit 120
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 30/09/2026You're not allowed to take photos of them which is understandable so here's a cuddly one instead 050
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Yer man in the centre left of the last photo knows when to go full whack for a camera, I have been suitably Māori Cultural Experienced for the day 020
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The way folk went on about it you would have thought the entirety of Rotorua smelt like Satan's arsehole, but in reality you just get an eggy whiff at the parts of it closest to geothermal activity, the town centre is completely normal 160
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Very funny how Europeans spent centuries being like "well swans are inherently white" and then we found out that not only is there a whole opposite side of the world but turns out the swans there are black 170
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 30/09/2026More hole pictures than your average Grindr album today 1231
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 29/09/2026If you are a Tolkien fan who is unlikely to visit NZ but also of a jealous disposition please avoid my posting later today 0100
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Bus driver has just told us there's more vitamin C in a kiwifruit than two oranges: but is there more vitamin C than in Stephen Kerr? 0142
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Trying not to think too much about UK politics whilst in NZ but I'm on a bus right now... small as this (left, from @willhaycardiff.bsky.social) is in grand scheme of things, it does feel like another sign that I (right) could end up very vindicated on "Andy Burnham, first Prime Minister of England" 191
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Hello this old volcano makes the beach sands and waters hot so I am having a nice warm sit in a wee pool we dug 050
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I simply could not be less sorry for this posting from Cathedral Cove where the sun is shining, the sea is shimmering, the waves are lapping, and I continue to enjoy the best trip of my life 1170
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 28/09/2026This isn't even today's destination, it's just a stopping point en route, after we've already been through a rainforest, what a country 1180
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Firth of Thames feels perverted, James Cook you can't just mash Scottish geographic terms onto English river names Also somehow we just went past a baby alpaca and a very angry bison, presumably like a wee exotic wildlife park or something 170
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 28/09/2026A very excellent 4 hours on Rangitoto island. Included a tight squeeze through some lava tunnels and so, so many stunning views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. Very cool how much of the lower parts of the island are still bare lava fields just beginning to develop growth. 1140
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Kiwis, what kind of birds are these? They are very sweet and came right up to investigate, A+ birds 2130
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Had a very nice walking tour with a lovely guide and group, and the most visually unique bit of it was actually this little park where the pōhutukawa trees have just... taken over and it looked a little post apocalyptic 050
Allan Faulds @afaulds.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Kiwis doing incredible things with their cuisine (to be clear I had a lovely batch of eggs benedict, rostis, bacon and spinach for brunch, this is just a wild combo) 240
