A track from last year's album 'iota' has made me a finalist in this year's InterContinental Music Awards (Los Angeles) in the Dance/Electronic category. Thanks to the judges and ICMA community for getting the single "Wave Hello" this far! #electronicmusic #idm #ambientmusic #ambient #techno #prog

Square photo of Bryan Tewell Hughes, the composer and producer known as AeTopus, seated and wearing a casual tee shirt. He has short hair, is balding on top, wears glasses, and has mostly black tribal tattoo work on his right arm. To the left is a yellow, white, and gold medallion featuring the InterContinental Music Awards symbol, which looks like a twisted golden loop or ribbon. The medallion contains the words "InterContinental Music Awards Finalist". To the right is a square image of the 2025 AeTopus album "iota".

I must rely on other people's phone shots of this awesome night, as I found myself too caught up in set-up, performance, and tear-down to document the evening myself. This was super fun, and was a solid exercise in quick stage turnover! #idm #goth #ambient #electronic @spottedpeccary @thebcompany

Each album usually contains one or two tracks that are stylistic outliers compared to the rest of the theme. Very often, it's those songs that get a lot of attention from broadcasters and fans. In 'iota', that song is 'Probe' www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vru6... #idm #oddtimesignature #electronicmusic

Relaxed, textured, and atmospheric, with tasteful glitch elements and plenty of air. And the cover art's color palette is a nice touch - I might have to get the vinyl if there are any left.

Most influential albums for AeTopus. A friend recommended this exercise as a way of getting to the essence of one's formative listening. An eclectic, meaningful mix of early electronic instrumental, orchestral, and ethno-ambient. #idm #ambient #musiciansky #musicsky #ambientmusic #musicisart

Photograph of nine compact discs sitting on a mat, arranged in three rows of three. In the upper left is Kitaro's Oasis, and in the lower right is William Ellwood's Renaissance. From upper left to lower right, the albums are:

1. Oasis - Kitaro - Peace, tranquility, and ambience, featuring the coolest tech of the late 1970s and early 1980s. I listened to this for hours on my Sony Walkman.

2. Forgotten Gods - Suspended Memories (Roach, Rich, Reyes) - Dark, tribal awesomeness. My first exposure to an innovative concept around 1993. It wasn't New Age, it wasn't dystopian synth movie music... Wow!

3. Deep Breakfast - Ray Lynch - DIY multi-instrumental genius. Why doesn't anyone talk about Ray anymore?

4. Aeon - Dead Can Dance - A dramatic, organic meld of history and technology.

5. Beneath The Icy Floe - Projekt sampler v.5 (compilation) - A collection of introspective indie, dark, Goth tunes that hit a good nerve in the early 00s.

6. The City - Vangelis - Concept album featuring environmental recordings, samples, and a hybrid electronic approach. I think I discovered this via Columbia House.

7. Green Desert - Tangerine Dream - I know everyone loves Phaedra, but this is my personal TD fave. I could loop 'Indian Summer' for hours.

8. The Dark Crystal (soundtrack, 1982) - Trevor Jones and the London Symphony Orchestra - Along with Jim Henson's amazing, other-worldly vision, this soundtrack was a mainstay. Shortly after having seen the movie, I used my lawn mowing money to buy the original LP, recorded it onto reel tape at 15 ips, and listened to it hundreds of times.

9. Renaissance - William Ellwood

Obviously, a musician's influences go far deeper than just a few albums, or the albums we feel are related to what we do. I know I've got a little bit of Blue Oyster Cult, Disney, and Sesame Street in me if we want to go way back. And if I were to fast-forward, I can't deny that artists like Ruxpin, arovane, and Eskostatic have offered more contemporary inspiration.

A few days ago, I listened to my album, 'Cup', for the first time since it was released in October. It has taken on new meaning now that the trees are bare and the natural world has gone to sleep (in the Pacific Northwest, anyway). Impermanence, acceptance, rest, and the prospect of rebirth...
