It’s #Caturday and Loki is sphinxing on a pile of clothes.
Loki, a European but culturally Armenian mostly white tuxedo cat, is sitting in a sphinx-like position on a pile of clothes. His head (which has a cute black spot on the chin) is raised and he’s looking in the distance with his green eyes. He’s very cute.

There are many cats in our campus*, they like to lay down in the parking lot in the late afternoon. Here’s a pic I took just yesterday. Unfortunately they don’t want to be petted. 😕
Three cats are lying in parking spots. There’s a black, fluffier one who’s just lying down, a medium grey one who’s doing a perfect loaf, ans a light grey one in an intermediate position.

I disagree, there could be collaboration, if you’re a collaborator in this sense.
2. A person who cooperates traitorously with an enemy.
Synonyms: turncoat, collaborationist; see also Thesaurus:collaborator

A (late era) Commodore 64 (the redesigned C model), circa 1989–1990. I learnt to program in BASIC and Logo on it as a kid, which directly led me to becoming a computer scientist (even though I unexpectedly and suddenly turned to the mathy side of it thanks to the Algorithms 1 course).

if you are reviewing an unpublished manuscript and you have the sheer unmitigated audacity, cheek, gall and laziness to upload it into an LLM to generate a review, let me tell you, you should be shunned and tarred and feathered

I don’t work on stuff suitable for STOC, but let me say that the 2027 edition LLM policy of one of the (former, AFAIC) “top” TCS conferences is pure shit, and I certainly don’t regret not being part of a community actively working on destroying science from the inside. Shame, shame, shame on you.
• Authors may use large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI tools in preparing papers.
Substantive use must be disclosed in the paper; minor copy-editing and grammar or clarity improvements to the authors' own text do not require disclosure, as detailed below.
• Program committee (PC) members and external reviewers (sub-reviewers) may use LLMs to assist with reviewing, with author consent required as described below. All reviews and decisions remain the responsibility of the PC members and sub-reviewers.
• STOC 2027 is also exploring private LLM-based tools to assist authors before submission and reviewers during evaluation; details will be announced later.Use of LLMs in reviewing and evaluating papers: PC members and sub-reviewers may use LLMs to assist in reviewing and evaluating the public ar Xiv version of a paper. Until that version becomes publicly available, they may use LLMs on the submitted PDF. Authors must explicitly consent to both uses as part of the submission process. This permission concerns the paper itself; reviewer reports and program committee deliberations remain confidential. Reviewers remain responsible for their reviews, and all decisions about papers will be made by humans. PC members and sub-reviewers must disclose all AI usage in preparing the review.

Speaking of fractals, here’s a Sierpiński triangle I generated (back in 2010) by opening three Remote Desktop Viewer connections to the very same machine.
A computer desktop showing three Remote Desktop Viewer windows (arranged in a triangle) showing the very same computer desktop with a smaller scale. Each windows contains, recursively, the same image, and the end result is a Sierpinski triangle.

Ah yes, thanks Google Scholar, I will certainly read this paper.
1. AI Declaration Statement

The proofs of all the results in this paper were found by GPT-6 Astra. The authors merely observed that the method of GPT-6 Astra’s recent proof of the Erdős-Sós conjecture (see Adamczewski and Bloom [5, Appendix B.4]) should apply in the directed setting as well and prompted GPT-6 Astra to prove the corresponding theorems for directed graphs using the same technique. The authors have checked the elegant proof for paths (Section 3) which was the motivation for this work. They also modified the presentation, and added further explanations where appropriate. They take full responsibility for all the content in the paper.

From Jack Vance’s short story “Turjan of Miir”.
In this fashion did Turjan enter his apprenticeship to Pandelume. Day and far into the opalescent Embelyon night he worked under Pandelume’s unseen tutelage. He learned the secret of renewed youth, many spells of the ancients, and a strange abstract lore that Pandelume termed “Mathematics.”

“Within this instrument,” said Pandelume, “resides the Universe. Passive in itself and not of sorcery, it elucidates every problem, each phase of existence, all the secrets of time and space. Your spells and runes are built upon its power and codified according to a great underlying mosaic of magic. The design of this mosaic we cannot surmise; our knowledge is didactic, empirical, arbitrary. Phandaal glimpsed the pattern and so was able to formulate many of the spells which bear his name. I have endeavored through the ages to break the clouded glass, but so far my research has failed. He who discovers the pattern will know all of sorcery and be a man powerful beyond comprehension.”

So Turjan applied himself to the study and learned many of the simpler routines.

“I find herein a wonderful beauty,” he told Pandelume. “This is no science, this is art, where equations fall away to elements like resolving chords, and where always prevails a symmetry either explicit or multiplex, but always of a crystalline serenity.”

I just discovered that one version (the first?) of the infinite monkey theorem (dubbed the “miracle of the monkey typists”) is due to Émile Borel (this is page 164 from his “Le Hasard”, 1914, available on the Internet Archive).

What? 😐
A screenshot from the SageMath documentation:

class sage.numerical.backends.glpk_exact_backend.GLPKExactBackend [source]
Bases: GLPKBackend

MIP Backend that runs the GLPK solver in exact rational simplex mode.

The only access to data is via double-precision floats, which means that rationals in the input data may be rounded before the exact solver sees them. Thus, it is unreasonable to expect that arbitrary LPs with rational coefficients are solved exactly. Once the LP has been read into the backend, it reconstructs rationals from doubles and does solve exactly over the rationals, but results are returned as as doubles.

There is no support for integer variables.
