The missing thing wasn’t documentation. It was the conversation that produced it. #LeftOfTheLoop

I will be in town for @devoxx.com tonight already. We might head out for dinner, so if you wanna join let me know.

I am not made for those minicabins. But on my way to devoxx belgium ;)

You overestimate my physic :D - but we can also do a park run or something - where we can run the same laps, at our individual speeds. I enjoy group runs. And usually I am the one out of breath 😂

Heading to @devoxx.com today. I am wondering if I should pack my running shoes and/or climbing shoes? Somebody wants to join me?

on my way to @socrates-conference.at - although it is only the second time for me, I feel like this is a key event for me already

Cool to see that @openfeature.dev and flagd can be used in Quarkus. Feels good seeing the projects you are contributing to, to be used.

#LeftOfTheLoop is progressing
000
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
The agent runs the fastest #loop anyone has ever had: output, correction, output again, until the code matches the spec. What it can't correct is the spec. Questioning the frame instead of the output is a different loop, an older and slower one, and it still needs the room. #LeftOfTheLoop #AI

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Running one, ideally, but standing left of it. The team ideally moves upstream, agreeing on intent through constructive friction rather than routing around it. Shared understanding is the scarce part. Code was never the hard bit, we just spent most of our time there.
000
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
I want to shift left all the way into planning. The prompt was an individual artifact, hence the validation is an individual one too. An agreement as a team before the agent runs turns the output into a team validation point. A team prompt, not a personal one.

You can't prompt for what you don't know to name. #LeftOfTheLoop

The agent will hold any direction. It can't tell you yours is wrong. #AI #LeftOfTheLoop

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
The loop amplifies whatever understanding the team brings to it. If the team didn't build shared understanding before the loop ran, the loop executes the misalignment faster. #AI #LeftOfTheLoop

We were still in the room together. We had stopped thinking together. #AI #LeftOfTheLoop

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
#AI agreement is cheap. Human agreement from the right person is not.
000
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Teams have always known that upfront alignment produces better estimates, and that's not a new idea. What's new is that #AI makes the alternative, skipping the alignment, running the agent, seeing what happens, feel so productive in the moment that the incentive to do the upfront work disappears.

My blog post series/braindump "Left of the loop" is growing fast. I have too many ideas floating around, how I think a team could heavily utilize loop engineering, without losing its shared understanding. schrottner.at/series/left-...

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
also i feel like a centralized team loop, somewhere would be cool. where the whole team just handsoff to this one remote loop.

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
like pair prompting, or specifically sharing local workflows. Somehow i feel like i am rediscovering Extreme Programming, but on the Prompting/Specification level.

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
I started writing my ideas around this down. as brain dumps. I have the feeling, that even how i am prompting is a knowledge I am not actively, sharing not with my peers or anybody. So in the end i feel like, prompting is something which lacks the knowledge sharing.

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
I am also using more and more Loop Engineering, but i feel like on the other hand I am also losing more and more the connection to my peers. Feels like i am less challenging the ideas with my peers and trust my gut (and th ai) more. how is it on your end?

An agent helps you ship the wrong thing faster. The ever-agreeing genie grants the wish exactly as you worded it, never the one you meant. The team was the part that pushed back. schrottner.at/2026/06/26/T... #ai #softwareengineering

Agreed. And I'd push it one step further -> the harder problem isn't even the spec artifact. It's how teams build shared understanding of intent before anything gets written down. The spec is the proof that happened.
010
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
The 'done' signal problem is real, but I think it's upstream of the harness. If the team builds the prompt together, as shared understanding and agreed intent, baked in before the loop, the harness has something to evaluate against. And the human connection doesn't disappear. It just shifts left.
000
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
interestingly, it seems like this is also picked up by my previous team and that makes me happy. It seems like my idea is generally worth it to share.

the agent validates against your prompt. muddled thinking → muddled output, just faster and more expensive. the team is the check on intent. before it runs, not after. the artifact changed, but the need for the room didn't. schrottner.at/2026/06/20/A...

A Fool with a Tool is Still a Fool
“A fool with a tool is still a fool.” — often attributed to Grady Booch I keep coming back to this quote when I watch teams adopt AI.

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
Totally agree and I think AI is actually making XP more relevant, not less. The team dynamic stuff XP got right is exactly what gets lost when everyone goes heads down with their own AI tools.
010
Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
Really cool to see this in practice! Curious — how do you handle the team dynamic side? My feeling is that the spec as a contract is the right shift, but the sense of building something together gets lost. Do your teams feel that gap, or does the process naturally solve it?

Simon Schrottner @aepfli.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
hot take: most companies are just giving devs AI tools and calling it innovation 🙃 wrote about what I think actually needs to change — spoiler: it's not the tooling, it's the process and yes, I am leaning on XP terminology. no regrets ;) schrottner.at/2026/06/18/T... #softwaredevelopment #ai

The Wrong End of the Problem
Every company wants AI in their development process right now. That part is clear. What’s less clear is where they’re putting it.

We've been putting ourselves in the middle of the software delivery lifecycle. By design. 🤔 What if the job is writing fitness functions instead? 🤔 Not reviewing pull requests, but defining what survival looks like.

The worst part of being laid off so far, was the uncertainty, what's next, when, how, etc. Somehow this is a new level of discomfort for me. Externally induced, but I already feel like I am learning something. And to be honest - the community (everywhere), is amazingly supportive. Thank you all!

What started as “let’s add some OpenTelemetry to a Python game” for my talk… …turned into a microservice refactor, clear service boundaries, and CI/CD everywhere. AI-assisted dev speed was wild. Dashboards, traces & metrics weren’t just visibility - they fueled the refactoring. Massive learnings 🤯
