On exhibit outside of B.C. for the first time, don’t miss visiting exhibition "The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act". This powerful exhibition focuses on the human impact and personal cost this law inflicted on Chinese people in Canada. Plan your visit today: bit.ly/4cCXGcK

Up before sunrise today so I opened the blinds and watched a bank of fog roll in as the sky got lighter & lighter. This city was my home for 8 years during grad school and I’ve missed it!
A round porthole-style window looks out into the Narrows of St. John’s harbour. In the foreground, a multi-story building, backlit by the bright lights from ships in the harbour. A heavy fog is rolling in.

Does anyone know of any articles focussed on the issue of public access to museum collections databases and AI? I’ve got some concerns as we work towards launching a public portal. OR if you work at a museum and some of your collection is available online, what are you doing about it? #museums

Museums and archives play such an important role, I’m hoping that this latest HBC news brings more awareness to this. Maybe it’ll also convince folks that appropriate funding for these institutions is crucial for their survival! www.ctvnews.ca/video/2025/0...

Read this on my flight home last night. An incredible page-turner but also filled with love and family connection. I highly recommend it if you’re on the hunt for a good read!
A paperback novel with a shiny red cover sits on a beige couch. The title, Bad Cree, is written in big white letters. Underneath in smaller black font are some Cree syllabics and the words “a novel”. A thin black line like a wire runs the width of the book near the bottom and three black crows sit on it. The author’s name, Jessica Johns, is in yellow under the crows.

Two belongings from the HBC collection are part of the beautiful Nuxalk exhibition at MOA, and I was honoured to attend an incredible day of celebration for the opening. I love this part of my job.
An exhibit case featuring Helen Housty’s belongings. Helen high-ranking Heiltsuk woman who married Nuxalk man Sam Schooner. A woven hat with painted form line artwork sits atop a mount that is nearly invisible, making the hat appear to be floating in the case. Next to it is a carved talking stick. To the left you can see the edge of a woven blanket. Inside MOAs great hall, surrounded by incredible carved totem poles, a large group of people have gathered to listen to Clyde Tallio, co-curator of the new exhibition.

Got things all set up for the Collections for Community access event on Sunday. I’m very excited to spend time with the birch bark bitings using this lovely light table. Registration is full, but we’ll offer another session again in the future!
Six beautiful birch bark bitings are laid out on a bright white light table to bring out the designs. The birchbark squares look orange and have intricate floral designs, all made by the artists teeth, that appear as brighter yellow when the light shines behind them.

Today’s run was a chilly one, with a windchill that makes it feel like -30, but invigorating! Stay warm fellow Winnipeggers!

Last week was busy, two work-related nights out for this gal! One was a lovely stewardship event so here’s a cool pic I snapped of my colleagues showing off recently collected fossils & lichens from Churchill.
A group of people, many with their backs to the camera, chatting with two curators. The gallery lighting is dim, but the table in front of the curators with their specimens (unseen) is brightly lit, casting bright light on their faces.

Surrounded by cats, a cup of tea, sweat pants, and about to caucus with my fellow union exec for bargaining this week. It’s a good day!
Picture shows the edge of a beige chaise lounge with one chonky white and grey cat curled up and a human’s thigh in cozy light blue sweat pants. In the background, a grey and white cat in curled up on a little cube beside a big window. Bright sunlight fills the room. A beige sectional couch with a small black and white cat sitting and looking towards a bright window. If you’re looking for gift ideas, this Palestinian spice set from @islamicrelief.bsky.social is a great idea. All proceeds go towards providing emergency aid & pyschosocial support in Palestine. It comes with recipes that I’m so excited to try!

A bit about me, although my academic training was #anthropology #archaeology I have been a museum #curator for the last 11 years. My approach to history and curation is through an anthro/arch lens, and increasingly with an anti-colonial approach (tricky when one of the collections I curate is HBC!)

Hello! I’m still figuring this place out, trying to find my various communities from the bad place, but I see that obligatory pet photos are due for your first post! So here are my three dudes (yes, one appears twice but don’t tell the other two!).
A handsome black and white tuxedo cat with two white paws dangling nestled in the top of a cat tower with a beautiful grey and white cat. Both look annoyed to be disturbed. A large white and grey cat sits in the top basket of a cat tower with his front legs dangling over the edge. On the second shelf, a much smaller black and white cat loafs with his front paws crossed.
