Congrats to #SICB's Division of #Phylogenetics and Comparative Biology @sicb-dpcb.bsky.social Wake Award for Best student talk (tie): Menna Jones Developmental mode and #anuran functional trait #evolution: inferences from novel comparative methods geosci.uchicago.edu/people/menna...
Menna Jones is a second year #PhD student in the Department of the Geophysical #Sciences. Menna is interested in the use of statistical and mathematical approaches to study #macroevolutionary pattern and processes. Her dissertation work is focusing on modeling the causes and consequences of #ecomorphological evolution and #microhabitat use in extant and extinct #frogs.

Congrats to #SICB er @sicb-dpcb.bsky.social awardee of the Wake Award for Best student talk (tie): Linnea Lungstrom for work on #Phylogenetic relationships and the #evolution of fin and body shape in the #surgeonfishes learn more about Linnea's work: linnealungstrom.weebly.com
Linnea noted:

"I am a 5th year #PhD candidate in the Committee on Evolutionary #Biology at the University of Chicago/Field Museum. Broadly, I am interested in how and why complex and integrative biological systems evolve. My dissertation research focuses on a specific case study: the #venom delivery system in surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae). I combine morphological, venomic, behavioral, and biomechanical studies with phylogenetic comparative methods to investigate how multiple axes of variation interact to facilitate or constrain evolution in this unique clade."

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology mourns the passing of artist, activist, and entrepreneur Sir Sam Neill.

Generations of SVP members found inspiration to become paleontologists through his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films. Sam’s portrayal of Dr. Grant brought an incredible humanity, awe, candor, and determination to the scientist-hero in one of the most popular pieces of media ever produced. In the decades since the release of Jurassic Park, Sam’s portrayal created a cultural touchstone for our field the likes of which we may never find again. Whether he knew at the time or not, he became a great friend of the profession of vertebrate paleontology. Our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be deeply missed.

An eel donated to a natural history museum in 1873 had two ticks embedded in its skin, making it the first known instance of ticks parasitizing a fish. But it was only first documented this year, when a tick specialist identified the ticks and reported the case in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

Ticks on an Eel: Museum Specimen is a First of its Kind
Two ticks found on an 1873 electric eel specimen mark the first recorded case of ticks parasitizing a fish—but only documented just this year.

My crutches received some decor at #entsoc25! Check out some of the stickers I acquired during the conference (plus a few I put on beforehand).

#entsoc25 on crutches! I deserve an award for surviving the conference week on those things. Still, learned a lot and had a fabulous time with old and new friends!

I am a PhD candidate in the Evolutionary Biology program at the University of Chicago. I study palm flower weevil systematics in the de Medeiros lab at the Field Museum. I am a fan of data organization, collections-based research, and open access science. I love all things beetles and Beatles :)
