There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

true, the cost of grandmas these days is unbelievable (via www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...)
Screenshot of an article. The screenshot reads: “People don’t always understand what the fight really is. They think, ‘Oh, they’ll take my guns away,’” he said. Instead, he has been encouraging union members to think about the “three Gs” of affordability — gas, groceries and Grandma. “It’s more about: ‘What’s your paycheck? What’s your gas?’” he said.

background on cold pizza: www.nytimes.com/1998/07/23/w... (article also includes the phrase "The tempest in the tomato sauce")
Cold pizza has become a hot topic in the race that will decide who becomes the next Prime Minister of Japan.

It started when John F. Neuffer, a political analyst often quoted by the foreign news media here, described the front-runner, Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi, as having ''all the pizazz of a cold pizza.'' Since then pizza jokes have abounded and pizza has had top billing in the Japanese press.

The Foreign Ministry, however, fails to see the humor.

''Unfortunately, Mr. Neuffer's 'cold pizza' is now too famous,'' said Mikie Kiyoi, director of the ministry's international press division. ''Of course, anyone can say what they want, but to have one country's prime ministerial candidate described as such is, well, sad.''

This is my favorite (extremely dumb) case example (Via www.huffpost.com/entry/donald...)
Slide showing more/less likely to vote questions asking about Trump's conviction and his taste in steak To state the obvious, it's unlikely that more than one-tenth of Americans actually see this as an important campaign issue. Instead, they're almost certainly using the question to reiterate their previously held opinions about Trump (or steaks).

That same thought process likely comes into play when polls ask about more serious subjects, too. If you see a survey that asks whether voters are more or less likely to support a candidate based on their opinions on climate change, say, or their views on gun control, remember that those may not be quite the deciding factors they seem, either.

This is, if anything, a fairly generous interpretation of what it means for a poll to show an advantage, given that the margin needed to show a lead completely outside of sampling error is roughly twice as big. www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...

And a reminder that polling, even election polling, is not just horserace questions www.cnn.com/2026/09/09/p...
How much can you actually learn from a poll?

While surveys can capture how voters are feeling at a given point in time, they can’t predict the future. This can pose a particular challenge in races like primary elections that often see multiple candidates, varied turnout and a lot of movement - see the Democratic primary in Michigan, where polls may have misread the composition of the electorate, and in Wisconsin, where polls also overstated the eventual support for the progressive candidate but accurately reflected that the race remained highly in flux.

Polls also aren’t meant to be precision instruments, which means that in a tight race, they may not be able to reliably measure which candidate is ahead – merely that the race is close. But even in an election year, most surveys also ask questions beyond whom voters are planning to support.

These questions can provide a sense of the dynamics behind the race: For instance, measuring anti-incumbent sentiments, highlighting voters’ ongoing concerns with cost of living, or tracking big partisan shifts. That’s often more illuminating than the horserace itself.

time traveling to 1916 to collect my railroad payment then back to the present to log into my fizzypress account from space www.pewresearch.org/methods/2026...
We asked respondents if they used any of six different social media platforms, one of which was a made-up platform called Fizzypress. We also asked if they had received any of six different government benefits in 2023, including payments from the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) – a real government agency, but one that ceased to exist in 1920. Both of these were asked early on in the survey and were intended to resemble screening questions looking for users of specific social media platforms or recipients of certain kinds of benefits. Of the full sample, 6% said they used Fizzypress and 9% claimed to have received USRA payments.
Later in the survey, we asked respondents if they had ever visited the International Space Station; 10% said they had. Finally, we asked if they had ever served on a Polar-class icebreaker ship, only two of which were ever built and only one of which remains in active use by the U.S. Coast Guard; 8% answered in the affirmative.
