Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 19/02/2026A fair few people live in Cambridge and commute to London, so building more houses in London would alleviate some of this pressure too. To your point, schools are closing in inner London and new build estates around Cambridge lack schools - there are enough resources, just in the wrong place 000

Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 06/09/2025I wonder if the pandemic has a role to play? Lockdown meant no nearly new sales etc so new parents were buying more stuff new, so there’s subsequently a glut of second hand stuff pushing the prices down 000
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 06/09/2025It made me think of the Ron Swanson line in Parks and Rec: “I hate metaphors! That’s why my favorite book is Moby Dick. A simple tale of a man who hates an animal.” 0130

Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 08/06/2025I get annoyed when Absolute Radio 90s plays Fools Gold (released 1989) but clearly they’ve decided they’ve decided it’s part of the 90s pantheon more than other songs actually released that decade for a reason 200
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 08/06/2025A lot of my generation got into 80s music from hearing it in computer games. GTA Vice City in particular, but my brother discovered The Jam from hearing Town Called Malice on FIFA 2004. 170
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 07/06/2025Fair enough, maybe I haven’t given them enough of a chance. I’ve found a lot of their songs sound quite same-y so haven’t paid much attention to the lyrics. 100

Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 07/06/2025Too many one hit wonders in the replies here - I think there needs to be a bit of iconoclasm in your choices. Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 30/05/2025I’m pretty sure most people would travel by train more if it was free. If fare dodging wasn’t possible some of them wouldn’t travel at all or travel a different way 000
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 30/05/2025Not that I think this is a useful counter argument or reason not to try to reduce fare evasion, but there’s a big difference between saying the fares evaded amount to £130m and TfL would have an extra £130m of it reduced fare evasion to zero. Most of the fare dodgers probably wouldn’t pay. 010

Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 20/02/2025There’s definitely a thing where boomers feel able to dismiss millennial/Gen Z culture as niche whenever they don’t get a reference but we’re seen as ignorant if we don’t get cultural references from before we were born. It becomes very apparent at pub quizzes! 000
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 18/12/2024Ultimately this is a clear revealed preference and anecdotally, retiring to the shires only seems to be on the radar of a subset of mostly white, middle class Londoners. Genuine Q - is it normal for people to move out of big cities at 60? I suspect other countries just build more homes. 130
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 18/12/2024But if you live somewhere adequate for your needs and have paid off the mortgage what motivation is there to pay a load of stamp duty to move away from a city you’ve lived in for decades and get free travel to enjoy? You’re might also spend half your week caring for grandkids. 1110

Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 21/11/2024But, to Thomas’s point, because he’s very much a sitcom character are these emotions still secondary to the gags? I don’t think you’d hate him as much as Malcolm Tucker or sympathise as much as Tim from The Office. Everything about Rimmer is played for laughs, the other 2 are closer to real people 210
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 21/11/2024There was plenty of pre-2000 cringe comedy (e.g. Rimmer in Red Dwarf) but the mockumentary style that dominated post-The Office, with no audience and no laugh track, made the cringe feel more intense. Imagine those earlier sitcoms with no laugh track or even a Peep Show-style internal monologue! 210
Adrian McMullan @adrianmcmullan.bsky.social · 21/11/2024That’s unfair. Just off the top of my head there’s The Office, Peep Show, The Thick of It, The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd, Phoenix Nights, Spaced, Derry Girls, Ghosts, Detectorists…and that’s just just UK sitcoms. 120
