Sadly not, although funny you say that, I do a spoof comedy history podcast that was inspired by TRIH, called History For You with Douglas and Hugh. Give it a listen!

Watching new Stranger Things. I’ve seen every episode since the beginning and yet I have no idea who half these people are or what’s going on. That can’t be good, right?

I was lucky enough to attend an evening with both T and M to promote the release of the whole thing on DVD box set, which I gladly bought. So I’m watching them all on that. But I’m not sure how easy to get it these days. It’s not on any streaming service that I can see.

Inspired by reading the lovely Terry Jones biography by Robert Ross to revisit Ripping Yarns. It’s comedy perfection start to finish, so well written and performed by Jones and Palin. Easily up there with the best of Python. Every episode is great but Tomkinson’s Schooldays is a masterclass.

I’ve never got on with this sort of platform. I’m shit at it. See also Threads and Twitter. And Facebook is a complete washout. So I stick pretty much exclusively to Instagram, although that’s gone south recently. I can’t wait until all of social media collapses under its own shittification.

I’m barely on here and forgot all about this. Nope, it’s former Doctor Who wife Sandra Dickinson. Superman III montage and she was the Wayne Foundation secretary in The Batman.

RIP Joe Caroff, much overlooked graphic designer who gave us some fantastic movie posters. He also designed the iconic 007 gun logo. #film #graphicdesign

There were so many, including the original incarnation of Show & Tell. Comedy Central had no interest nor respect for this series even though we got millions of downloads back in the day. They buried it. So it goes.

Once upon a time, before podcasts were ubiquitous, I produced a series called Utter Shambles for @robinince.bsky.social and @josielong.bsky.social We had brilliant guests, but a lot of episodes are lost. Around 25 still exist out there, they were really fun to do and I recommend you seek them out.

Thoroughly enjoyed chatting about this underrated gem starring Jeff Goldblum, Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson. Written by Richard Curtis before he descended into sentimental guff, Mel Smith’s directorial debut is far from perfect but utterly charming.

Right now the world seems more fragmented and polarised than ever in my lifetime. But I think we can all agree there is no better music genre for a balmy May evening in the garden than yacht rock.

Isn’t it though! Like Joel it was a gap in my Carol Reed knowledge. It’s everything the Third Man isn’t, while sharing the cinematic strengths of that work. For such a small film, it’s so impactful and really lingers in the mind, doesn’t it?

Thank YOU. It’s a cracking little pod. It’s like Desert Island Discs - you can’t help but be drawn in and utterly captivated by the deeply personal confessional intimacy of each episode, while at the same time, working out what yours would be as you listen. Splendid stuff.

Catching up on #ComfortBlanket. This episode is gorgeous. I’d not seen Fallen Idol before so it prompted me to seek out this slice of postwar British Noir. It’s classy, smart, thoughtful, warm and fascinating. So just like this ep then. Bravo @robinince.bsky.social and @gralefrit.bsky.social

So far the Trump administration has been the plot of The Phantom Menace and now Trading Places. Somewhere there’s a CIA operative in a gorilla suit trapped in a crate.

I’m 47. And I’ll never be not furious when the tv I enjoy get bumped for sport. My family were all getting ready to enjoy Gladiators this morning, only to discover it wasn’t on last night cos of the fucking football. Fuck you, football. I wanted to watch Gladiators. I’m 47.

Here’s a bit of fun trivia. One actor has been in both a Christopher Reeve Superman film and the Robert Pattinson Batman film. Any guesses without jumping online?

Aside from everything else, Trump’s legacy will also be normalising the word cunt. The most offensive word in the English language is now being used by just about everyone. I hear it every single day. Because it’s the only word that best describes what Trump is.

Still. Can’t help but feel that even if (that’s a big if) Amazon did deliver a cracking Bond tv series, no matter how good, it would dilute and smudge the whole Bond thing forever. I like how he’s exclusively a hangover from a golden age of cinema…

Adrian Mackinder @adrianmackinder.bsky.social · 20/02/2025
Got a sinking feeling…they’ve been so protective, keeping Bond away from telly and in cinemas etc. then again, there hasn’t been a great Bond film since CR, so fresh blood is required. But I think Craig having too much input is the reason for the recent, dour, joyless Freudian slogs.

It’s like proper telly now. You need a full-blown production company and marketing department behind you to cut through.

Not enough to go on to tell if it's any good. Not a fan of that bloody dog. There's no need for a super dog. But it looks suitably comic booky, which we all need from Supes right now. Cautiously optimistic. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhUh...

And from the third category: Superman, any Bond, any of the original Star Wars.

So my top three in the first category would be Scrooged, Christmas Vacation and White Christmas.

There are three types of Christmas films. Those explicitly about Christmas, those that happen to take place at Christmas, and those that remind you of Christmas.

Yeah I still watch it. Living abroad gives it an extra layer where it reminds me of home and it’s become a cosy chum that has reliably never changed. Hislop is still great at laying into just about anyone and the tone of each episode still seems to depend entirely on Merton’s mood that day.
