New paper out w @davidbritain.bsky.social & T. Blaxter: Using data from 50K speakers, we show that many once-distinctive English regional terms have sharply declined. New paper out – Why do Swiss Germans struggle with the English STRUT vowel (but, sun, up)? It doesn’t exist in Swiss German. Findings: KV > Gymi, boys > girls, Netflix/music/gaming ≈ no effect. Accents are natural — Swiss English is no exception. lnkd.in/dnPSxYuH #phonetics #swissgerman #accents

🇨🇭📖 Früher war das Sofa ein Statussymbol des Adels, heute steht es in fast jedem Haushalt. Sofa stammt aus dem Arabischen, Kanapee aus dem Französischen, Ggu(u)tschi wohl aus dem Italienischen. Während Sofa immer dominanter wird, halten sich Kanapee & Co. v. a. im Süden.

Unbekannter Anruf – wie meldest du dich? Ältere sagen oft nur „Ja?“ oder ihren Nachnamen. Jüngere überraschen: Sie nennen häufiger Vor- und Nachnamen. Offenbar spielt der Wunsch nach klarer Identifikation und Individualität eine grössere Rolle als vermutet – auch regional unterschiedlich.

🎶 Je ne rrregrette rrrien – apical /r/ used to dominate in German-speaking Switzerland. Today, uvular /r/ is spreading, particularly in the northeast (Schaffhausen, Thurgau) and Basel. Contact with Baden-Württemberg, where /r/ is standard, is likely to play a role www.dialektatlas.ch

Coop – für mich und dich: Seit 2005 prägt dieser Slogan die Deutschschweiz. Uneinigkeit herrscht beim Geschlecht: Ältere sagen meist der Coop, im Westen hört man das Coop, selten die Coop (z.B. Jaun). Auch Jüngere bevorzugen der Coop, doch das Coop wächst, die Coop nimmt ab 🛒 vdf.ch/dialaktatlas...

🍁 🌱 Einst gab es in der Deutschschweiz eine Vielfalt an Wörtern für Sommersprossen – von Loubfläcke bis Merzeböle. Heute verdrängt Summersprosse die alten Begriffe fast vollständig. Nur in wenigen Regionen im Südosten lebt die einstige sprachliche Vielfalt noch weiter. vdf.ch/dialaktatlas...

"AI" is fundamentally bad at social things, and language is social. Add to this that there's no profit incentive for language documentation and preservation, and you see that is a feel-good smoke screen. These companies do not care about marginalized people. They make money off of exploitation.
