Second, this old field maple, appearing to be kept improbably upright by the fence wires running through it like guy ropes

A tree high on a bank, the surrounding soil almost entirely gone from around its roots, so that it remains attached by a single piece of root. Fence wires run through its middle, appearing to hold it upright.

I’m delighted to discover there’s a word (edaphoecotropism) for the process by which trees engulf foreign objects. Today’s walk took me by two fine examples… 🧵

I think this is autumn rather than Chiltern gentian (but grateful for a #wildflowerid). It’s lovely either way. On Noar Hill, Hampshire #WildFlowerHour

Evening Richard - huge thanks for everything! Can’t quite believe this is the last time we’ll be doing this, but I’ll go with: 1: Pixies - Surfer Rosa (5 pts) 2: Wire - Pink Flag 3: Boards Of Canada - Music… 4: Sugar - Copper Blue 5: Buzzcocks - Another Music… #5DebutAlbumsFinal

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

The wildflower meadows above Selborne have largely gone to seed, but the skylarks were still quietly chatting to each other and there were surprisingly plentiful finds for #wildflowerhour

One of the great joys of these polls has been finding new music, so it seems fitting for at least one such discovery to make my #5DebutAlbumsFinal list - this is probably my top contender amongst these - the gradual, subtle shifts and interplays are hypnotic - an album to truly immerse oneself in

My favourite album of all time, never mind favourite debut, and the most revelatory of my formative years - unhinged, brutal, beautiful, seemingly untethered from anything I’d heard before #5DebutAlbumsFinal
