SB 5740: Seeks to significantly roll back eviction protections. This bill will result in more people “defaulting” by not filing the correct paperwork on time, will limit the defenses that tenants can bring in an eviction lawsuit, will make changes to hamper the right to counsel representation process and will make other changes that will negatively impact renters and housing stability.

SB 5371: Senate ver of a similar HB. This is the landlord “alternative” to rent stabilization. Instead of stopping landlords from gouging renters, they want the state to pay for the rent increases. Further the rental assistance program this bill creates is temporary for the tenant – up to one year – what happens after that? And it is entirely funded out of the document recording fee (DRF), meaning it sweeps funds for homelessness prevention. It proposes to sweep these funds at a time when there is already a deficit of over $253 million in DRF funding for homelessness services. This bill would result in more homelessness.

(b) The office of the superintendent of public instruction shall 23 make the statement of student rights available on its website and is 24 encouraged to include the statement in materials provided under RCW .2528A.230.15026 (2) The statement of student rights is as follows:27 (a)(i) Public school students are subject to the Declaration of 28 Independence and the United States Constitution, and its privileges and protections, including:29 The free exercise of religion;30(A) The freedom of speech;31(B) The right to peaceably assemble;32(C)33 (D) The right to petition the government for a redress of grievances;3435 (E) The freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures; The right to a due process of law;36(F)37 (G) The right to equal protection of the laws; and38 (H) The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
