It's hard to imagine futures beyond the contemporary crisis of academic neoliberalism, especially while institutions are committed to drastic redundancies and the dismantling of academic careers. What is lost? What modes of thought or ideas have we lost while in survival mode? Join us next week👇

[This first image is of the letter describing the event taking place.]

Dear Colleagues,

It has been incredibly difficult to think about our research ideas or projects as we are faced with intensified institutional precarity. For many of us, last week was a harsh confrontation with the limits imposed on us by the neoliberal academy and its implications for how we perceive and value academic life. To paraphrase Wendy Brown, structural neoliberalisation and the economisation of our ideas (abstracted as citations, publications, grant capture, etc.) confines much of our work. After Hannah Arendt (1958), we could call this mere academic life. What is constrained and ultimately eliminated through neoliberal rationality is good academic life: “the cultivation and expression of distinctly human capacities for ethical and political freedom, creativity, unbounded reflection, or invention” (Brown, 2015: 43). How could it be otherwise? What opportunities for imagining a better future for academic work might we encounter? [ALT TEXT OVER TWO IMAGES DUE TO CHARACTER LIMIT]

[This second image is of a rally for jobs at the University of Nottingham with the banner "WE are the University."]

We invite you to an open workshop that seeks to reclaim joy in critical inquiry as a necessarily collective endeavour. This will take place at 1pm on the Tuesday 26 May, during our Marking and Assessment Boycott, in the A39 lecture theatre at the Clive Granger building. We invite informal presentations that last up to 10 minutes from colleagues across the social sciences, arts, and humanities. This will be an opportunity to present a “work in progress,” or perhaps more aptly, a “work never progressed,” that could be developed in this session against the tide of constraints within economised academic life.

This is a difficult time for us all, and it feels pertinent to take a moment to celebrate our collective work and passions. We hope that this event could also be a space to collaborate and help one another, and a needed reminder that within our anger at systemic failures there is always, necessarily, a hope for a better future of academic work!!
If you’d like to speak, please email adam.searle@nottingham.ac.uk with the subject line “Work in Progress,” any ideas welcome and no need to prepare an abstract, slides, or title or anything. This is informal by design, and we’re asking for your name just to manage time accordingly and to make sure everyone has the space to talk.

In Solidarity,
Adam and Nick

bring it on!!! We are angry; most of all we are hopeful. Another university is possible and we will continue to scream it into existence so loud that university management have to hear. Love to my colleagues @uonucu.bsky.social

2) the painting of cows to resemble zebras, thus reducing the incidences of biting fly parasitism (expected to increase significantly without population crashes due to warmer winters). We posit that somaforming experiments risk foreclosing alterity through their pre-emption of an alien Earth.
Figure 2 from the article: "Kojima, Tomoki, et al. "Cows painted with zebra-like striping can avoid biting fly attack." PLoS One 14.10 (2019): e0223447."

The original caption in the academic publication is: "Example of the area of legs and body used to count biting flies on cows."

The image shows a cow who has been painted with white paint so that they resemble a zebra.

We read the politics and practices of somaforming in the case of bovine agriculture on an increasingly alien Earth. We follow two examples which caught our attention: 1) the use of gene-editing to dilute coat pigmentation, thus reducing solar radiation absorption and therefore heat stress; and
Figure 3 from the article Laible, Goetz, et al. "Holstein Friesian dairy cattle edited for diluted coat color as a potential adaptation to climate change." BMC Genomics 22.1 (2021): 856.

The original in-article caption is: "Color dilution phenotype of genome edited calf. Shown are pictures of the PMEL mutant calf with non-edited control calves for direct comparison of coat colors and distribution of white and dark markings."

The image compares cows that have been subject to gene editing with a control group. The top-right image in particular shows how pigmentation dilution results in a significantly lighter coat.

Somaforming human astronauts to survive on alien exoplanets is presented by Chambers as an 'ethical alternative' to terraforming: the 'lighter touch'. But in her wonderful novella (To Be Taught, If Fortunate, 2019), somaforming leaves astronauts estranged and alienated from their home planet.

first time I’ve seen a Nicobar pigeon up close and completely unsurprised that they don’t remind me of the much larger, flightless, big-beaked dodo at all; the idea of gene-editing this animal to de-extinct a so-called “dodo” is so utterly far-fetched it’s beyond comprehension to me

my phone just reminded me of this: six years ago today, with the May68-inspired banner I sewed (very poorly I might add) on strike in Cambridge with @benaplatt.bsky.social higher education is in a far worse place now: la lutte continue !!

I had fun making this banner with Kiko over the weekend at least, despite the grim context of having to cancel my teaching and lose my pay, we could make it fun

Makiko has now voted for industrial action (n=3) more times than she has celebrated her birthday (n=2) We can’t give in now. We are so close to victory after this long, exhausting fight. Together we can win a future for our sector and for each other. Get out there and VOTE YES! #WeAreTheUniversity

great turnout for our @ucu.org.uk rally demanding the University Executive Board rule out compulsory redundancies. We are an university, not an educational commodity; there is no 'future Nottingham' without its staff! We won't shut up, we won't accept neoliberal strategising. No to education cuts!!!
