عادل @adel-mwizani.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Funny false friend between Italian and Lebanese baby talk 😅 'nanna' in Italian refers to sleep; "andiamo a nanna" means "let's go to sleep" but 'nanni' or 'nann' in Lebanese refers to food or eating; "hallaʔ waʔt l nann" means "it's time to eat" 010 0
عادل @adel-mwizani.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Cool parallel between Italian and Lev Ar: 'Peccato' and 'ḳTayy(e)' both mean sin and are used to express pity (eng. equivalent would be 'shame') The current word for sin in Lev is 'ḳaTiyye' or 'zanib'; this means that the old pronunciation was fossilized in this usage and some other expressions- 130 0

If so, it might be a borrowing since people work there since the 60s. And now I crave kafta 000 0

عادل @adel-mwizani.bsky.social · 17/02/2026Shakespeare in Lebanese Arabic 😀 What do you think? I like to use the rare demonstrative هك or هاك; I feel like it's fancier than هـ or هيدي I also felt the almost archaic ضيّ fits the register more than the more common ضوّ Also بيضوي instead of بيضوّي 141 0

عادل @adel-mwizani.bsky.social · 15/02/2026Another Lebanese Arabic loanword: بَنّد، تْبَنَّد bannad, tbannad to ban, to get banned e.g.: bannadūni 3a Facebook tbannad ḥsēbi 3a Insta What’s cool about it is that it’s borrowed from the past tense form of the English verb "to ban" in order to get the productive trilateral root b n d! 271 0
Reposted by عادلعادل @adel-mwizani.bsky.social · 15/02/2026I can't see how this meaning could've developed from the Arabic root to be honest. In Italian, they say "andare in tilt" to express a similar meaning.. So I guess this word might come from the TILT error mechanism in pinball machines! When triggered, the whole machine stops working! Wild if true! 031 0
