🪙 Today my FWF project "Another Side of the Coin" begins at the University of Vienna. Over three years I'll trace how the Maria Theresa thaler, a silver coin still struck long after the empress died, circulated across the Western Indian Ocean (1753–1970), and why it lasted so long.
Logo of the project Another Side of the Coin, designed like a coin. A black silhouette of Maria Theresa's veiled profile, traced from the 1780 thaler, sits in the Western Indian Ocean, framed by a pale grey map of the coasts of East Africa, Arabia and India. Around the rim runs the legend "Another side of the coin" with the dates 1753–1970.

Yesterday I have started my postdoc at the Institut für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte of @univie.ac.at! Looks like this will be my new everyday view from the office.

The project is a collaboration between timetraveller.voyage and the Arms Beads and Cloth project, recentering African consumerism in Global 19th century History (armsbeadsandcloth.unipv.it), synergically employing qualitative and quantitative methodologies for African Economic History.

At the end of this month, I will leave the ISG Department to start a new project at the University of Bologna. It is not a farewell, but a goodbye and see you soon. Meanwhile, I can recommend to apply for this post to anyone who is looking for a friendly, enriching and engaging research environment.
