We can generate these ships from that data export tab, as the new version of SpaceShipPDF nears completion! This includes extending the custom font of "defensive shapes" to cover Screens and Filters as well as armor. What's significant is these came straight from SpaceShipPDF! No editing needed!

On September 8th, for Star Trek Day, we posted the three classic ships from Star Trek: The Original Series. For about 10 months, we've been working on getting the ship design tool chain functioning for 3rd Edition Squadron Strike. We've shown prior iterations of this screen shot.
A spreadsheet screenshot with purple cells with ship names, and six columns showing various bits of text, in white on gray, white on dark blue, white on light blue, white on rust-orange, yellow fixed width on charcoal and green fixed with on charcoal.

Sometimes, you take a break from teaching the games, and playtesting the games, to just play a known good scenario with people who are fluid with the game. We're doing a run of Gauntlet at 5 PM Eastern US time on Friday the 18th! Observers are welcome, though we won't be explaining much.
A side view of the initial setup of Gauntlet, with an Earthlike planet (11 hexes in diameter) hovering over a hex grid over a blue starfield. There are 8 box miniatures at different orientations and altitudes around the map, for an initial scenario setup that's rough for both sides!

Rather than play out another turn where I'd be pursuing him and shooting him with longer ranged guns, my opponent conceded, and the Federation task force let him leave Federation space.

Happy Star Trek Day! These are Squadron Strike interpretations of Star Trek: The Original Series classic trio of warships. They're not based on Star Fleet Battles, or the Star Trek: Tactical Combat Simulator; they fly in 3D and showcase some of the additions made to the game engine in 3rd edition.

Want to learn to fly a rocket ship? Game starts in 2 hours, more or less. If you've not played before, we'll teach you the basics in 20 minutes -- no combat, just piloting. Scenario details in the alt-text!
A hex map over a blue starfield, with five asteroids hovering at different altitudes, and four box miniatures of Canberra-class CLs in the center, about to light up their ammonia-fueled NTR lantern rockets to fly a rocket rally!

The rules:

1) You must fly within range 3 of an asteroid to score its points.
2) You must not crash into the asteroid; this will destroy your ship.
3) Your sequence for which asteroids to fly by in which order is randomized, and secret.
4) Winner is the person who does it in the fewest turns.
5) Ties go to the person with the most fuel left over.
6) Second tie breaker is the person with the lowest vectors at the end.

As a test case for fixing the Weapon XML tab, Ken toodled around with making some Trek ships on the "SI 13 is a Huge Ship" scale. Can't show the SSDs just yet, but...
A set of 6 weapon tables for Squadron Strike for a Plasma Carronade (a Wide Conic Area weapon that peaks at 12 damage in each range bracket), the Photon Torpedo (A long range weapon with a cooldown turn that has fairly steady damage and low Penetration, plus Split Strike /2), the Klingon Disruptor Cannon (Only goes to range 10, low damage and high Penetration, with Phasing and Continuous 7).

Federation Phasers and Romulan Phasers are _nearly_ identical; the Federation Phaser has more damage in the middle range bracket, it's got a slightly wider point blank bracket...and has Precision Fire, which the Romulan phaser lacks.

The Klingon Phaser is slightly less fancy than either of the Federation or Romulan types, has the same range rackets as the heavy weapon, and has more variable damage on the closest bracket.

Design once, six exports! When @witty-user.bsky.social gets around to making a pretty output for Fleet Ops, and makes an HTML export for it, we'll add it to the output tab... Other than a quadratic equation throwing a Starmada Hull Size of 0 for a DN needing an error-bound...this might be done!
A screen capture of a spreadsheet with purple and blue dropdowns on the left, and "banners" (columns of text) in gray, dark blue, light blue, burnt orange, black-with-yellow text and dark gray with green text.

The first four banners have white text, and are Squadron Strike's XML, Starmada's XML, Starmada's HTML, and Fleet Op's XML.

The two dark banners have Starmada's PlainText output, and a provisional PlainText output for Fleet Ops.

(Nobody would play Squadron Strike with a PlainText SSD other than to say they did it once....)

For a handful of people, this screenshot is very exciting. Ken has finished[*] the rebuild of the XML export process for Squadron Strike ships. XML is now generated on the individual Ship and Fort tabs, and pulled into the export tab, which consolidates the two XML export tabs into one.
A screenshot from Excel, showing one blue and 19 purple cells, and a gray area with light orange text. The blue cell says "3D", the topmost purple cell says "HAS Sample" and the light orange text looks like HTML or XML tags.

Game resumed two weeks later—here's some screen shots! We're slated to pick things up again on Monday the 13th.
A space map with blue stars under a hex grid with eight spaceships (shown by art on six sides of a rectangular box) and some torpedoes on the map at different altitudes.

The Federation ships have been flanked by the Romulan and Klingon ships who have gotten behind them.A higher perspective of the fight after another turn of movement. There's a hex map over a blue starfield, with four Federation ships, low and in the center with two Romulan ships lined up to launch plasmas, and two Klingon ships that have been concentrating fire on one of the Federation ships.

For those who know the Squadron Strike rulebook, this page shows a...transition. This is the beginning of the last formal rule in the book—transitioning between map scales with momentum-based movement. This part is new: Fuel (or magsail) use and transitioning to the ΔV map. Almost done...
More realistic settings, using only Mode 2 movement, with 256 second turns, 0.25 G thrust increments, fuel and magnetic sails use this table instead:
[Table showing different turn lengths/game scales/thrust scaling and fuel scaling, ranging from Newton's Cradle tactical hexes to the delta-V map printed in that product.]

Once the scale transitions out of the first row of the table, maximum thrusts halve at each step. Retain fractions as a way of determining which turns (out of a consecutive set of two or four turn) that you can apply thrust 1 on. Note that the fuel efficiency does not improve between the second and third rows!
Once you’ve reached the third row of the table, you may switch to the fourth row freely; your ships using magnetic sails, dropping their thrust to 6 milligees, taking 100 turns of thrust to generate 1 hex/turn of tactical velocity change,, but spending no fuel. If your setting has a delta-V, transitioning to magsail use means you should switch to the delta-V map and the (much longer) turn lengths.

While we were set to resume the SFU ships game, two players couldn't make it, so we ran a Habakiri versus Marauders game instead, playtesting Screens over Armor 1 as a defense, and letting someone newer to the game fly the simpler-to-fly Habakiri.

Can your Star Trek game do this? @thomasthecat.bsky.social (wink)
Four Constitution CAs dealing with a drive-by attack by a pair of Klingon D7s, while a pair of Romulan Warbirds comes in from above. There's six drones in flight from the Klingons and the Romulan just launched a type R torpedo that'll be pursuing the Feddies for three more turns of movement.

One Klingon ship has taken about 10 damage inside shields and repaired one box of it.

Friday's playtest scenario is set up! Some details are in the alt-text. If you've gone through a Squadron Strike teaching game with the Romance of the Seven Realms, or just happen to like Star Wars-y space fighter derring-do, this should be fun for you. Start time is 8:30 PM EDT, 12 JUN 2026!
A screen capture of Friday's playtest scenario setup. There are two Wyverns and a Watatsumi jumping a Rookery (recently downgraded) escorted by an Anduril and Habakiri-class fighters.

The Rookery has to get off of the A map edge with a speed no greater than 6; it gives double points for the Royalists if it does so.

At some point, I'm getting 2-4 more pieces of art, and the "make ships" part of Reprisal of the Hegemon (the second Romance of the Seven Realms product, after Flight of the Fisher Queen) will be done. I've been proactive, and been placing art on countersheet templates as it comes in.

I could make this gun even worse, by adding: Multi-Pen (Choose 2) for the Penetration die rolls (roll 4 dice for Penetration, pick the greatest difference between any two) and then Raking Fire (2), (roll a separate Hit Location roll per 2 points of damage past Armor.)
A screen capture of the Barrage-O-Matic weapon and a sidebar describing its horribleness as a game play experience.

The Barrage-O-Matic
The Barrage-O-Matic is not a fun weapon, takes too long to resolve, and your opponents will be exasperated with you for using it.
If we spend the 3 APs for the Overload trait, we double the number of shots spent. For the sake of insanity writ large, we’re going to fire all 6 shots, which Overloads to 12 shots.
We roll a 10 on the first shot. All 11 of the remaining shots hit, and there’s at least one Continuous hit going.
Statistically, 40% of our 11 shots will be Continuous results, giving us ~4.4 additional shots total.
Of those 4.4 additional shots, 40% of them will hit, giving us 1.76 more hits.
Of those 1.76 additional hits, 0.7 more will roll a 7+. 4.4+1.76+0.7=6.86 additional shots, or about 19 shots total.
For each shot, we’ll need see how High Impact affects Accuracy, and roll Penetration each time.
We hope you brought snacks to share while rolling this out.

Working, and working from @witty-user.bsky.social's Fleet Ops numbers, I've got a rough sketch on deriving weapon card sets from SqSt weapons for the nascent card game that's been lurking in the back of my head for 8 years. The "1,2,2,3,1" and "1,1,1,2,1" are damage values for a set of 5 cards.
An Excel screen shot. The number in the dark brown cell is how many cards are in this 'set', the rows that say 1,2,2,3,1 and 1,1,1,2,1 are the short range damages for each of 5 cards, and the long range damage for each of 5 cards.

Last night's teaching game! I mercilessly diced @docvivileandra.bsky.social's Phobos cruiser to death, with an *astonishing* run of missile hits, while she apparently bought her fire control system from Packard-Bell after its acquisition by Temu.
A screen shot of a Newton's Cradle teaching game, where two ships are very close to each other in the middle of the shot; unfortunately for the Phobos, piloted by Vivi, that ship that's close at hand is a Shackleton-p, and its particle beams are very accurate.

There are two more ships with vectors taking them out and down, and another Phobox that's about to eat a lot of missiles on the left of the screen.

Ships are shown by boxes with artwork on them, over a hex map with a blue starfield, rendered on sticks to show alttiude. Each box has a second stick rendered showing where its vector will take it.

We need two to five volunteers! The Squadron Strike 3rd Edition rulebook, tutorial book and SSD book are complete, and we need proofreaders. Proofreaders who've never played or read the game are particularly useful. We use a Google Sheet for tabulating feedback. Full details are on our Discord.
The last page of the Squadron Strike tutorial. The two paragraphs of text read:

Heinlein glanced at the painting Hitler was airbrushing, which had somehow turned the Sirius system into a roiling, frothing mass of rock, dust, and actinic rays coming from a double star. It looked nothing like reality. The Austrian was getting worked up again, his hands gesticulating as he mangled English and German at Smith—the man could only seem to focus on something when he was outraged over it. Typical artist temperament. Not wanting to get drawn into another of his tired recapitulations of Nietzsche and Marx on the nature of the superman and the inevitability of destiny, Heinlein withdrew to the blessed solitude of paperwork.
Two copies were needed of this report—one for the U.S. Navy, and the redacted one for the Brasilians.

There is a picture of an angular spaceship with glow-y bits at the stern on the left of the panel, the spaceship is verticaly composed, lit from a light source off panel to the upper right, against a backdrop of rocks.

It's populated the correct "types" of carrier trait, and the correct numbers of flights for each type of fighter present on this Squadron Strike ship design after it's been converted over.

The art that came in...
A top-down view of the somewhat stealthy Marauder fighter; it's wedge shaped with two guns pointed forward, conformal missile bays, and is gray with two huge staged engines in the back; it's mostly metallic gray with purple highlights and two green pentagons on each of the wing-foils.A top-down view of the Rookery Mercenary Armed Troop Transport. It's a reddish maroon in color with engines on pods that can pivot, and the art direction was "Imagine if the Corax and the Razorcrest had an _ugly_ baby." It has a very obvious large bridge up front, is mostly cargo capacity, and has juuuust enough guns that it could be dangerous.

It's a slow-moving brick of a transport. Surprisingly nimble for turning, though, and has an extensive FTL drive array for getting out if it doesn't look like the crew will get paid...

With money in the bank to pay this month's bills, we'd like to buy more space fighter art for the sequel to Romance of the Seven Realms! Here are the ones we've procured so far. If you'd like us to buy more space fighter art, head over to www.adastragames.com and buy a few things. :)
Top-down view of a Royalist "Anduril" class fighter. It's a missile truck with good straight line acceleration but turns poorly.Top-down view of a Mercenary "Corax" class fighter. It's a durable, primarily beam armed fighter with a (for the setting) excessive Bridge track and a double-hyperdrive for leaving when a fight goes poorly...Top-down view of a Hegemonic "Jaculus" class fighter. It's the fighter that lost the fly-off competition with the "Cockatrice." Not because it was worse, but because while it was better, it was significantly more expensive.Top-down view of the Rimward Realms "Habakiri" fighter -- the Rimward Realms are the rimward three of the Seven Realms, and have a slightly different unit availability procurement; the Habakiri is a superiority fighter that carries two Photon Lances and a pair of LRMs, which have a tricky all-aspect launch arc abilkity.

Snowfall counts for boardgamers! "How many games can we complete before the snowplows get here?" And yes, dammit, we are very much trying to give you ANY reason to crack a smile given the horrible actions of our government in Minneapolis.
A weather map that has replaced the expected snowfall levels with "How many boardgames can we complete?" with the purple zone over West Virginia labeled, simply, "Twilight Imperium."

Which is infamously a game that takes 2-3 hours to set up, and about 2 hours per person with experienced players. And has expansions that let it sit 12 players...

Tight maneuvering around a planet.
A screen shot showing a planet with a bunch of spaceships flying around it. The two gray ships are trying to get close (range 4) to the planet to rescue stranded crew. Fortunately, all the Karthian ships are moving away from where the stranded crew might be (which is on the octant of the planet on the southern hemisphere between directions E/F and D)

We'll see if this deception pans out...

Want to learn to fly a spaceship? I'm running a Newton's Cradle teaching game at 2 PMish Eastern time on Thursday the 12th. We've got open seats! @thebrainofchris.bsky.social and @drskyskull.bsky.social can attest that it was a lot of fun, they learned a lot and would do it again...

A slightly better angle at the end of turn 2:
The two ships that look a bit like horseshoe crabs have pitched down because their objective on the planetary surface is in the southern hemisphere. The larger golden hued ship in the foreground has discovered that lucky disintegrator shots hurt a lot....and there are three more ships coming into the fight/getting ready to pounce on the objective on the planet if it's revealed.

Here's the roster, and ship sheets for the ships that've been beaten on a bit so far: The two Furys nearest the Kirklin DDs will have their missile launchers available on turn to put more fear of "Oh god, what if those hit?" into the League forces.
A table showing a roster of spaceship names ranging from the Wang Je Bao to the Bleeding Solace of Youth. There are two Kirklin DDs (Wang Je Bao and Feorag Dunnin), two Tempest DDs (Storm's Lash and Surge of Serene Screams) and 4 Fury ESs (Anger, Acrimony, Vankath's Bitter Warning, and Bleeding Solace of Youth) in the fight.

The last entry is the missile salvo fired on turn 2 from Surge of Serene Screams to the Wang Je Bao.

The roster also shows their orientaton and current hex+altitude and where their EOT tent would be.A Squadron Strike SSD of two Kirklin destroyers in a "butterfly" layout with the weapon mounts in the center and the damage tracks to each side. The Wang Je Bao (on the left) has taken 3 SI damage, and otherwise taken light hits. The Feorag Dunnin (on the rgith) has lost a bit more capability (a shield regenerator for the right side) while both have some damage on their shields. The Surge of Serene Screams got manged pretty badly by League Disintegrators on her first pass through the fray -- she's taken three Structural Integrity hits lose a Defensive laser and one of her multipurpose lasers, had light shield damage, and has a lot of unrepairable damage from Disintegrators. Three of the disintegrator shots that harmed her skipped shields and rolled high damage.

From tonight's game. Everyone hated the their ugly choices on turn 1. We're about to get to the consequences of those choices on turn 3. Lots of "Oh, this is _great_. Stressful, but great." "Oh, I have regrets." "That's OK, I have regrets too." "Hey, wait for me..."
A planet, a hex grid and lots of spaceships doing wierd things in 3D.

Just set up Gauntlet for tomorrow's Scenario playtest. Here's a photo of the initial setup. I have been assured, over the last 22 years, that 3D doesn't make any difference in a spaceship fight... This is for the Exile's Stars setting.
A screen shot of a Squadron Strike scenario with an earthlike planet dominating the view, and 8 ships at different altitudes and orientations as the scenario begins. The earthlike planet is to the left of the image, where there are two small ships in the lower left corner of the map. There are two pairs of other ships with vectors taking them from the right edge of the map to the left, with lone ship set to intercept two of them. There's an 8th ship that's hidden behind the planet...A screen shot of a Squadron Strike scenario with an earthlike planet dominating the view, and 8 ships at different altitudes and orientations as the scenario begins.
