This seems to me to get it exactly right and obviously applies beyond mathematics: solving a problem is not the same as developing conceptual understanding and insight, and might even come at the expense of it.

Am I missing why this is not a nonsensical exercise/question? there is a temperature parameter which governs the stochasticity of LLM output and it can be set so that the algorithm outputs the identical response to a fixed prompt ie achieve perfect consistency

Difference-in-Differences with a Continuous Treatment
(Forthcoming Article) - This paper analyzes difference-in-differences designs with a continuous treatment. We show that treatment-on-the-treated-type parameters are identified under a parallel trends assumption analogous to the binary treatment case. However, comparing these parameters across treatments is challenging because parallel trends does not rule out selection bias. We discuss alternative, typically stronger, assumptions that eliminate selection bias. We further show that popular two-way fixed effects estimands admit multiple interpretations, depending on the underlying causal building block, all having important limitations as meaningful summaries of treatment effects. Finally, we introduce alternative estimation procedures that avoid these drawbacks and demonstrate them in an empirical application.

We estimate Indian land officials' preferences over geographical posts and test a "matching market" model of how politicians use assignments to extract rents 1/3

In next set of results, we show politicians leverage this to control bureaucrats/extract rents by posting them close to home and threatening transfers if they don't comply -- especially in jurisdictions with high corruption potential (measured with satellite data on flow of land transactions) 3/3

Aditya Dasgupta @adasgupta.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
In our first set of results, we use a novel cross-referenced design to estimate bureaucrats' preferences over posts, including measures of preference intensity. Posts matter quite a bit -- with a 1-SD improvement in proximity to hometown worth a large fraction of official salary 2/3

i don’t have a strong conviction. I’m just saying a model could absolutely be written where a new technology that reduces frictions worsens equilibrium knowledge accumulation.

Morally speaking yes — but sometimes “sand in the gears“ is needed practically for systems to function well (think Tobin tax). I don’t have a strong position on LLMs tho. Just saying in principle it could be the case that a tool that makes research faster could be bad
