I remember seeing a (New Yorker?) one-panel comic as a kid that I didn't really understand at the time. It was a back alley scene with graffiti on the wall saying "Dukakis is a liberal"... the point being "liberal" was a dirty cuss word.

Help me understand tariffs. People are saying that Trump tariffs will raise the cost of goods to Americans because importers must cover the cost. I get that. If that's the case, why are other countries considering retaliatory tariffs? Doesn't that imply there is indeed some punitive effect?
