I finally realized who that woman seen next to tRump in the Oval the other day reminds me of... it's Lisa Marie in "Mars Attacks!"

We have thus “breakfront” cabinet (no idea why it’s called that) that Julia’s grandfather got from the Illinois Land Office just before it closed in the 1940s. How long it had been there we don’t know.

Hey, I just looked at the new Lunar Distribution catalog, and in the TwoMorrows pages you'll find Back Issue #170 featuring an article about Howard the Duck's nemesis Doctor Bong written by me! This issue reaches stores in September - but you can tell your local retailer to order your copy now!

The first Superman comic I ever read. Not a great issue by any means, but the ones that came after made Big Blue my fav’rit.
Cover to Superman #206, 1968, by Neal Adam’s. Superman is in chains and being accused of assassination.

I grew up with this piece by Mel Lazarus hanging in my kitchen. It now hangs in my office. My parents lived in the neighborhood near him when they were dating.

Farewell to the great Robert Duvall. He made a lot of great movies, but 1983's "Tender Mercies" has a special place in my heart. It's a quiet, intimate movie, and it made me a fan of a certain stripe of country music.

I also owned several pages of original art drawn by Sal B., all long gone now. Around 1980 a comics shop I occasionally visited in Paramus, NJ, had a bunch of his pages for not much money, and I picked up this lovely Marvel Two-In-One splash. I had a few Rom, Space Knight pages of his as well.
Splash page from Marvel Two-in-One #17 by Sal Buscema, with a woozy looking Spider-Man leaning on a rooftop chimney for support.

Three of the earliest issues drawn by Sal Buscema that I can remember. Marvel Team-Up cover not by him, but the other two are.

Current listening: "Thrillington," a full-on orchestral reimagining of the Paul and Linda McCartney album "Ram," recorded in the early 1970s and released years later. One of the weirdest entries in Sir Paul's back catalogue.
Cover of "Thrillington," a very odd album by Paul McCartney under the name Percy "Thrills" Thrillington. The art shows a man with the head of a ram, wearing a tuxedo and playing a violin.

Recent purchase while traveling for Baltimore Comic-Con: "Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy." Recorded in 1954, the album has been remastered with bonus tracks. Incredibly, it was made with Handy hanging out in the studio, while the band played songs he wrote at the start of the 20th century.

It still drives me crazy that the Dire Straits box set "The Studio Albums 1978 -1991" does not include their 1983 four-track EP, which memorably includes the song "Twisting by the Pool."
The hard to find 1983 Dire Straits EP.

It’s such a badass move to draw a cover without the main characters from the series. Not sure who else besides Kirby could even get away with it.

I discovered Starlin with Captain Marvel #30 (January 1974), an issue I bought because it had the Controller on the cover - the villain from Iron Man #28, a comic given to me by my grandparents.

We've seen a bunch of time-traveling villains in the series already - but the Collector at least has something specific he's trying to do. I may be partial to him as he was the villain of the first issue of Avengers I ever bought myself, #119.

Just as he sits in the SRI's seat, a mysterious figure enters. TO BE CONTINUED! Right here - same team as last issue, including "Frankie Ray." The story opens with a shot of Hawkeye that's as cool as anything John Buscema might have drawn. Hawkeye gets up, now knowing how to get the message.

...to get back to the team, he knocks the champ out with one punch. (The stories keep saying CA has no super powers, but when he needs to K.O. the champ, it seems real easy for him.) Back to the team - Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch are trapped in glass tubes, but SW hexes her way out.
Heck and Romita's art doesn't get much more Canifferiffic than on a face like this.

HE says "where do I start?!" SM wakes up and finds that Mandarin has added a bunch of buttons for various rays to his sword. He uses his beams to project an image of Iron Man to the team, then says you have to add Swordsman to the team before sending SM back to NYC. Best panel of the issue shown...
Swordsman floats near the Rainbow Bridge? on his way back to the Avengers' headquarters.

Found 'em! The original hardcovers from "The Nemo Library" were B&W, from 1986 - and that cover scanned badly, as it's actually green, not blue. They were repackaged in 2006 with fancier covers and (I think) color interiors.

And I wish Count Nefaria had played his computer or whatever that is like a pipe organ as he does on the cover. I love Don Heck, but he rarely hit the fantastic notes in his art as Kirby did.

Avengers #13, Feb 1965. Lee/Heck/Ayers. Cover by Kirby/Stone that belies the story's organized crime trappings. Still... we start with a great splash page, closeup on the team as they're being shot at. The action starts as the team stops a robbery, and the ganglords of the Maggia are not happy.
