As a brutal civil war reignites in Yemen between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and the government coalition backed by Saudi Arabia, a humanitarian disaster seems inevitable.

Why the Houthi advance towards Yemen’s Marib, Taiz matters
Marib is home to Yemen's oil sector. Whoever controls it secures economic gains. Taiz's location makes it critical.

The escalation in Yemen is focused on the Red Sea coast, but don't forget that there's also significant fighting happening in frontlines in al-Jawf, Marib, al-Bayda, etc. Even contacts in places as far as Hadramawt are noting the fallout owing to the Houthis broader embrace of the use of drones.

Mokha (and the west coast writ large) is windswept and impoverished, but it was also the target of massive investment (largely by the UAE) over the past few years; ie a modern new port and airport and a constellation of military bases. All of this, as of the past few hours, is now in Houthi hands.

Increasingly anxious chatter coming from the west coast, where anti-Houthi forces have been under unprecedented sustained pressure, particularly in the NRF stronghold of Mokha. Still not inevitable, but the fall of Mokha would unquestionably ease the Houthis' route south to Bab al-Mandab proper.

Yemeni govt forces making gains against the Houthis in al-Jawf and al-Bayda; Houthis continuing to put significant pressure on NRF positions on the Red Sea coast. Barrage of Houthi missiles launched at energy facilities in Saudi Arabia over the past 24 hours underlines the path towards escalation.

The line "there is no military solution to [insert conflict]" is a classic cliche and, certainly been used plenty of times (including by this writer) with regards to Yemen. But its hard to imagine a more fertile time for a peace accord than the past few years (regional escalation notwithstanding).
