Been in a gorgeous hotel in Rhodes for the best part of a week. The only shame is they have been playing what is clearly an AI album of songs on repeat the entire time. Sometimes just the same song over and over again. Even when not, it _sounds_ like the same song. Nightmarish.

Every now and then I pop on to RAWK to see what people are saying. This reply from a user called Fitzy pretty much nails my thinking. This line in particular stood out to me: “As if simply blaming the manager helps simplify a complex set of factors that have caused this slump.”

Persisting with Slot was absolutely the right decision back then. You can be certain this was all unavoidable, but adding a winger and Isak not breaking his leg could just as equally see us sitting comfortably third now and looking good for a proper fight in CL.
Then a reply from Fitzy saying: Agree. The discussion around Slot often seems to be myopically focused on how a single man is responsible for all this season's ills. As if simply blaming the manager helps simplify a complex set of factors that have caused this slump.
That's not to abdicate Slot of blame but one can also accept that events have conspired to make the season incredibly difficult.
On Beth Lindop, I completely agree with her point that many fans do seem gleeful around Slot's apparent demise this season. An 'I told you so' attitude has really corrupted a lot of the discussion to the extent that these folk refuse to acknowledge any mitigation for the slide. It's Slot's fault and that's the end of the matter.
I was pleased that the show didn't allow that theme to dominate as there seems myriad reasons for why we've ended up here - most notably an unprecedented tragedy that many untrained and unqualified blowhards don't want to entertain.
Now that is pure bad faith.

A typically great piece from Andrew. This might be the key bit. The problem with the idea of “doing it for Diogo” is that it couldn’t last. Plus, what does it mean when you lose? It was always going to be an emotionally draining season.
