Amazing. National trust: Please don’t put stones on this ecological site. Power company: underground electricity cable is cool right?

How are you judging success? Wilson won 4 elections, partially decriminalised homosexuality, abortion, abolished the death penalty and did equal pay, and more! Id say Brown was one of the most successful, and he didn’t enter parliament till 32.

MPs salaries were only introduced in 1911. The last 100 years is a long time, and parliament has changed a lot. I think it’s less about what has happened, and more about what sort of government do we want? I’m happy with career politicians, but what’s wrong with asking for real world xp first?

I think career politicians can be fine, but not as your *first* career. If you’ve never lived at all in the world you aim to govern you’re a monarch not a parliamentarian.

So they just perpetually had those adults in charge through no mechanism for decades? Was it a cultural thing? Has it gone before? Will it come back?

This appears to be correct, so how have they previously been so successful? Are they immunocompromised currently or is this the DNA that lets them swap positions that had worked so well up to now?

The depressing fact I’ve come to accept as I’ve got involved at a low level of politics is that it is actually incredibly difficult to have any sway at all over the river of electoral success, and that a lot of what moves the dial is external to the locus of control we all wish we had.

I don’t necessarily disagree with this. But I’m trying to work it out, is it that “industry” should pay for its own power usage? Why can’t they just use the grid like anyone else? Or is the issue if they build their own energy generation it should be green?

It’s also so bleak that no one cares. “We’ve crushed these students under thousands of pounds of debt!” Most people: 🤷‍♂️🤷🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷🤷‍♀️

I will never understand how we’ve managed to design and live in a system that has failed every part of it so blatantly. It would be more palatable, but still unideal, if at least the universities were getting the profit made off the loans, why on earth is a private company the only ones profiting?

There are several parts of this story that speak to a deep policy failure. observer.co.uk/news/nationa... This is a real example of the type of slippery slope policy that makes slippery slope arguments so appealing. “It’s only 3k” “it’s only 9k” well now it’s over 200 thousand.

Five years ago no student had such extreme debt. Now many thousands do – and the reasons are often beyond their control

Whilst the Labour Party goes into a meltdown about its inability to get behind its leader or elect a new one. I am reminded of the void left by Twitter, where i would have once watched this all play out. It would’ve been statements on there and seeing who liked what. All gone now.

This is why his time is up. He can’t direct a cabinet.

Literally this. You don’t need everyone to like you under FPTP. My money right now (because my friend that calls this right so often said it) is a weird coalition and a horrific parliamentary mess.

I think the big problem with this, is it assumes brexit can be reversed. The EU now requires any new members to adopt the Euro. Polling on that looks quite different. We won’t be able to go back in with the deal we had, so these polls are a bit misleading.

Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Also when you’re saying “the media is the problem”. You’ve lost. The media hates all politicians, and doubly so for Labour ones. It’s baked in. If you weren’t planning for a hostile media, that just reinforces that you’re not a good leader. You have to be able to do things in spite of that.

What do you think he’s done that means he’s done his job well. I want specifics. Convince me.

Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
He isn’t. The PLP does not like him. He is not a good Labour leader. I actually get a disturbing amount of my news from journalists on Bluesky. I can also differentiate between “this Labour government has done some good things” and “we haven’t done enough and missed some wide open goals.”

Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Burnham or rayner would be better. The reason he’s tanking isn’t because of “the media”. It’s because he’s not doing a very good job.

Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
I don’t think he is that determined. Of the five “missions” there hasn’t really been sufficient progress on any of them. That manifesto was such an own goal with the unnecessary hand tying with economic rules. Of course I can imagine it, I can also imagine some much better Labour leaders.
100 1
Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
You’re right. I phrased it wrong. He wants to be prime minister, but he doesn’t like the politics of the job, or I think the job itself.
100 1
Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
A) it wasn’t an ambitious enough manifesto. B) all the good headline stuff I think has actually been done by cabinet ministers (Milliband GBE, Haigh Rail, Rayner housing and local government)
100 1
Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
He doesn’t like being political. There were junior ministers who’ve joined and left the cabinet without ever speaking with him. He doesn’t like managing disputes that have a political edge between senior cabinet ministers. He should’ve been a permanent sec not PM.

Adam KB @adamjkb.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
Wouldn’t be very Labour to read the writing on the wall and bring in someone who actually wants to be prime minister and would do it well. Much more on brand to limp on and make ourselves outrageously unpopular for another decade.

Young people given the vote from age 16 in Scotland are not only more likely to continue voting as they get older, but do so in higher numbers, a new study shows.

Ok so weirdly when I used to teach on an paramedic course this came up. Looking at implicit biases in research and how it affects patient outcomes, thinking about why ethics rules exist the way they do, then more broad ethical discussions would sometimes ruffle a few students up the wrong way.

Except there is literally 0 GPEW mechanism to ensure your elected officials comply with party policy. And if they ignore it, there are 0 consequences. (And sometimes you just change the policy to match what the officials were doing). So is it really a policy?

I was really worrying ahead of May 7th, I felt like Labour weren’t putting forward a political vision for the country and leaving it wide open to reform and populism. But then. As if from nowhere. The answer to all of our prayers. Dropshipped CLP “merch”. Electoral victory here we come!

@stephenkb.bsky.social random one. I’m chatting with some other Labour members about how bad Keir is doing, and I’m sure I saw you write something about how he wasn’t meeting or firing ministers personally, have I fever dreamed that?

My favourite thing about the AWS outage is some people writing on Bluesky with true sincerity “we shouldn’t put all our eggs in one basket”. Or even better listing which services are down. If they were all in one basket you wouldn’t be able to tell me. And it would be everything.

It was such a weird PMQs. I don’t know why they decided to bang on about this. I doubt it has real cut through, it just teed Starmer up to look good and in control. I really think with a more capable LOTO Starmer would be gone already.

It’s also not that hard to make some of this very achievable. One of the biggest barriers I saw for mature students wasn’t money, it was lack of ability to plan caused by timetabling and room availability. Made it difficult for childcare, work. All sorts. Measuring unis on consistent…

I logged back on there to see what was going on and learnt they were all in a fever pitch about a horrific murder that I had seen nowhere else, with accompanying footage obviously. Using it to justify both racism and cars. It’s worrying anyone of note is still using X.

This isn’t new. When I did clinical advising in control over a decade ago we booked with Addison Lee if the patient was safe to travel and needed transport. The average 999 call out back then cost £170 and the taxi was like £20.

This is fortuitously timed. I’m nearing the end of a rewatch and Senator Vinick effectively came out as an atheist in the press. The whole show has humongous “Hot take I had before Stephen Bush explained why it was electorally insane” ™️ energy.

Superb thread. I’d add a permeating mindset of “no building” that comes from our stagnant planning system and leads to this acceptability of nothing changing. It’s most frustrating that it’s pervaded all political parties. Radical reform is needed but someone nicked that word.

Monzo has 14 pre made funds you can pick from. My rule of thumb is if I need/could need those savings in the next 6 months they stay in savings. If they can sit longer into an investment. My savings get 4%. Investments 16% in the last 3 months.

…and how to prevent it happening again. I’m fairly certain on shifting to a consent first based model, because that would also stop a mass data scrape. Weirdly it ends up sounding like dynamic pricing. Cost of a substack £10/month. Cost for a data scrape £100? Dunno. Think it’s interesting.

Not expecting to change anyone’s position just looking to have the conversation. As Hitchens wrote “Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake”. The discussion is enlightening and moves thing on alone. I’m left from this wondering how authors and artists should be compensated…

Ok, but isn’t that like Joseph Swan hating lightbulbs instead of hating Thomas Edison? You have a right to be angry and to seek retribution, but I don’t think it’d reasonably be as much as you’d hope for because you don’t licence your work differently depending on what it’s used for?
